The discharge line from the compressors gets hot enough to burn skin. Should it get this hot? What could be the problem?

Hello Raymond, Thank you for writing. A hot discharge line can be the result of temperatures in the compressor head and cylinders becoming so hot that the oil loses its ability to lubricate properly. This causes rings, pistons and cylinders to wear, leaking valves, and metal debris in the oil. We hope this helps!

I have a Craftsman permanently lubricated air compressor. The discharge line gets hot enough to burn skin. Is this normal? What could be the cause if this is not normal?

Hi Raymond, Thank you for your question. The temperature of the discharge line should never exceed 225 degrees Fahrenheit. If it goes over 350 degrees Fahreinheit, the compressor may fail. If the compressor is overheating, it may have low suction pressure. This can be caused by a pressure drop, loss of refrigerant, parts not fitted correctly or obstructed strainers. The compressor can also overheat if it is in an area that is warm, if it is not properly vented, if the parts are worn or clogged, or if it is used a lot. If your air compressor has excess discharge pressure, it can overheat. This can be caused by a blockage of the condenser air, the discharge line not being properly fitted or dirty condenser coils. You will need to inspect your air compressor to see which part is causing the issue. Once you have determined the part you need and you need to order it, please feel free to call customer service.
