Drill chuck was worn
First I removed the chuck retaining screw. Note this is a left hand screw. I then located a 1/2 allen wrench, then inserted the short end into the chuck and tightened the chuck up on the allen wrench. Lay down the drill on its side and strike the allen wrench a couple of times and the chuck will become loose, then you can spin off of the spindle. Install the new chuck hand tight and replace the retaining screw.

Chuck broke & would not open enough to reach lock screw
I ended up having to cut away the side of the chuck with a cut off wheel. I mounted drill body in a vise & cut the side off chuck at a spiral from tip(where key gear is) to base. "Peeled" the metal casing away (very sharp!) to expose the internal threaded ring gear that tightens & loosens the chucks "fingers". It was cracked in half and would not allow open and closing. I had to remove the broken ring gear with pliers & screwdriver. With that removed could access the lock screw.
(Remember the lock screw is a reverse thread!) Once lock screw is removed, I left drill in vise & used a small pipe wrench on remaining chuck. (standard thread) I smacked pipe wrench handle with a small sledge hammer & it broke loose instantly. Threaded on new chuck, tightened it by chucking up Allen wrench & smacking it once to tighten. Installed lock screw. Done deal
