Hello Kevin, Thank you for writing. Sadly, the part you are requesting we do not have listed for your model. We strongly recommend you contact the manufacturer, as they would have this information in their system. Ask them for the part number you require and contact back to see if it is something we carry. We hope this helps!

Question: How To Add Oil To The Impact Clu...

seandil

Hi,
I just bought this impact wrench used and would like to check the oil level and change, if necessary, the oil level of my Chicago Pneumatic CP 734H 1/2 in. impact wrench. It takes 30 W oil to do this for this particular wrench, but the instructions do not tell me how or where to add or check the oil associated with the impact clutch?
I found where to add the oil, a small hole on the side, but none would go in when I tried. However, I first need to check what's in it. Is there a drain plug or something on this wrench. A diagram on this website did have a plug listed?
I know the air inlet tube get a few drops, 4 or 5, per hour of use of 10W oil; so I am OK there. I also bought an inline $10.00 or so air filter that I think screws into the air tool?
I was going to try to screw it into the end of the air hose on the air tool end, so I could use other tools without having to unscrew the filter from one tool and then screw it back into another before use. I was going to put it before the female end of the coupler and just install a regular 1/4 NPT male fitting into each of my air tools. I have a CP old 800 series air ratchet as well.
A diagram I have does not identify the impact clutch. These are my first air tools and I am a novice and not familiar with what's what.

Please let me know,
Sean
Sean,Most soft draw impacts take a 10 w none detergent oil or if the specs call out a different oil use what they call for. The small plug on the side of the tool that says "oil' is very hard to put oil into without a syringe. We use a syringe and a long needle to get the oil past the hammer cam .If you noticed that if you just try pouring oil into the hole it will want to bubble out. What helps is rotating the anvil while adding the oil. They don't need much, just enough to keep the cam and cam pins lubricated.Maybe .5 to 1 Fl oz should be fine.Hope that helps.
Tinker
Thanks Dave,
Yes sir, I tried rotating the 1/2 in. square end of the gun while tryinhg to add the oil alittle at a time, and the oil would not go in. I bought this thing off eBay and have no idea how much oil is in it. I did not see on the parts list what an impact clutch is? I did see the anvil. I first need to see how much oil there is inside the impact wrench.
I am unsure where to buy a syringe that will add the oil properly? Is it a medical syringe or something special? Let me know. I am good at taking thing apart, so I guess I will just remove the back plate on the rear of the gun, and carefully go from there? I just do not want to tear the impact wrench up the first time I use it.
I got an old CP air ratchet too. However, the impact wrench looks new. I am going to break them both in, on my next project. The project involves repairing my car and motorcycle. I'll wait until the weather is better.
Thanks again for the advice,
Sean
For the 15 years that i repaired tools,we always used air tool oil. we made it out of hydraulic mixed with break fluid which is the same as the airtool oil sold. now i have been out of the repair end for 4 years but never did we use that heavey of oils.trapped too much dirt in the cam and hammer and vanes.
Hi Chic,
I am a novice to all this. These are my first air tools. I got them to remove pulleys on my car, and blade clutches on my lawnmowers. Once I get the hang of them, I will use them to remove all the fastners I can on my car, bike, and mowers.
I did get the manual with the gun and it strangely did say to use non detergent, which I am guessing is just plain weighted oil with no additives like one would find in 10W 30 for example, in the impact wrench. I looked up air tool oil and thought it was just 10 W oil? Some people told me to use transmission fluid? Others said it would dissolve seals. I am usure what you mean by "hydraulic". I am gussing you mean brake fluid + 10W oil?
However, for Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench it specifically says to use 30 W oil in the impact clutch and 10W thru the air inlet. Someone suggested since it only says to add 4 to 5 drops per hour of usage, to just use 30 W in the air inlet end and not worry about buying two kinds of oil?
I am not going to be using these tools much. What would you suggest that would not over time ruin any seals inside the gun? Where do I check to see how much oil is in the gun? Do I just remove a plug I saw in the diagram, drain, and refill the gun with around 1.0 oz. of 30 W oil. What would you do?

Thanks,
Sean:eek:
Hi,
What appeared to be a hole for a syringe was actually a plug or drain that required an Allen wrench to removed it. I drained the impact wrench, added new stuff and it works like a charm. I even put a new drain plug on my portable air compressor. Thanks to you all I am getting very handy!
