This is an authentic Ryobi replacement part manufactured for use with 1/4 sheet double insulated sanders. Carbon brushes will wear out eventually because they are in constant contact with the rotating armature while the sander is in use. Worn brushes can cause the motor to spark or smoke, and can also cause the sander to turn off and on while in use. This brush is sold individually.

Removed the sanders's pad assembly by removing the 6 screws that hold it in position.
remove the screws that connect the two halves of the sander with the dust collector shroud
Remove the upper part of the housing, remove the cord restrainer screws
Remove the on/off switch toggle from it's support
Separate the two halves of the sander body, taking note of the locations of the wires to the brushes and the mounting of the brushes in the body
Disconnect the wire clips from the brushes, exercising care not to pull the wires out of the clips.
(if this happens, you may need to solder the wire back onto the clip(s), a very weak crimp connection is all that holds the wires into the clips)
Connect the clips onto the new brushes.
Re-insert the brushes into the housing while compressing them against the rotor.
Reassemble the body parts in reverse of the disassembly instructions above.
