Question: Fuel System,gear Oil

dadonk

my dad bought a 21A-634F063 tiller with a 5.5 hp Briggs & Stratton. some years ago, and never even put gas in it.Its never been started untill today. It runs but only with the choke on the step down from full choke. What do i need to do? I also need to know what kind of gear oil and how full to fill it?

Hi dadonk,

An engine that will only run with choke is a sure sign of carburetor issues. I would suspect that the dealer test ran the engine and there was a little fuel left in the carb. That fuel will deteriorate over time and varnish the internal parts of the carb. It even tends to turn to a gel like substance. To fix it you will need to remove the carb and disassemble it. Clean everything with some carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air. A small ultrasonic cleaner does a great job cleaning carbs if you have access to one. Reassemble and you should be up and running again.

The gear box uses SAE 85W140 or SAE 140 gear oil. Fill the transmission until the oil is halfway up the side of the main drive shaft.

I hope this helps!

Question: Carburator

Ken Bohnert

I am trying to find a carb kit for the 21A-634F063 tiller with a 5.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Can you point me in the right direction, or do you have them? It starts, runs for a few seconds then quits. It has sat for a few years without being used. Thanks, Ken
