I recently had to take my Dewalt DW980 cordless drill apart to clean, and when I went to put it back together I ended up with several extra parts which I can't figure out where they go. When the transmission was taken out all the gears and whatnot came out, and once I put it back together there were still these 5 little metal pins left as well as a little metal piece with one pin on each side and a metal piece in the center. I've looked all over, but just don't see anywhere where these pieces could possibly go or what they're even called to look them up. Thanks

Hello JTS, If you could post an image of the extra parts you have left over, it might be easier to identify them and then let you know where they go. -WJA
Here's an image of the pieces. link removed
For some reason the image didn't post properly the first time, but I've fixed it. So does anyone know where these parts could go???
Hello JTS, Well I thought that once we saw the parts that you are having a issue with, it would be an easy fix. But talking to a tech, the last time he had a transmission fall apart on him (2 years ago). He had to get another one and carefully take it apart to see how it all went back together. At this point his memory fails him on the parts in question. Hopefully someone out there will see this and be able to help you out. We'll keep trying though. -WJA

Hi JTS, The large bottom pin is the detent pin that goes behind the detent spring. This keeps pressure on the torque adjustment collar. the other parts are cam followers that are position on the front of the transmission .When you pulled the transmission fron the gear case housing the shaft from the gear case housing that went into the transmission went into a small collar. Those rollers go round that collar. Its hard to explain without a exploded view of the transmission.Hope that helps a little.

[QUOTE=diggla;5913]Does anyone know how to replace the clutch and motor on the 18v hammer drill? Is there a good write up that i could use? Thanks" If you take the rear cap off removing the four screws, you can then lay the drill down on the table with screw side up.remove remander of screws take clamshell off.you will now be looking at inside of drill grab motor lift up pull to the left its now removed, take and lift gearcase and chuck up a little pull to the right its now removed . assembly is the reverse.when installing transmission there will be a pin sticking out the front wich you must align going back into gearcase look at notchs on the side of the transmission those will line up with ones inside of gearcase as you install it you may have to turn chuck to get it to seat all the way in motor is self explaintory its really pretty easy hopefully i have helped you out good luck

I have a DeWalt model DC988 heavy duty xrp 18v hammer drill. When drilling, it tends to "clutch out" or skip, as if perhaps a gear is missing a tooth (or several teeth). I have a few questions: 1) What might be causing this? 2) Is it something I can fix myself? If so, is there a repair manual available somewhere? 3) If it is something left to a repair shop, where should I send it? Thanks in Advance, Steve Bohne
Hi sbohne, It sounds to me like the transmission is on its way out. It is an easy repair to make. We have an article that will walk you through the repair. You can find the article at the following link... Removing And Replacing DeWALT Drill Transmissions The new transmission is part #397892-05 Let us know how it turns out! -UtahAV -Mark

Hi All, How do I remove the DC988 Transmission. I have the motor removed, that was not a problem, just not sure on how to remove Transmission. thanks.

Hey arizzotto, If you have the front housing removed..[4 screws] and then the housing half separated..the transmission will remove easily..but you do have to have the front part of the drill removed.. parts avail at ereplacementparts.com hope this helps..:) Craig

I've got a nicely used DC988 Type 1 hammerdrill. Over time, the drill has lost it's torque. Even if I keep it on Max Torque, it still clicks with only some resistance. Any thoughts on parts to replace? Thanks.
Hey rockydog, Most likely it is the transmission..they do wear out over time.. part # 397892-05...avail at ereplacementparts.com.. hope this helps..:) Craig
