took apart drill. disconected leads to trigger, plugged into battery and the battery smokes. (only happens on this drill model dw987). Plugged batteries into other drills and they work fine. Why would the trigger cause this to happen?

You are pretty much putting the positive and the negative together.

Can I change my trigger assembly? I have no variable speed. The trigger sticks also.
Mike
You can replace the trigger, but on your DW987 drill it's part of the switch (part #152274-19). The switch is usually the problem if you lose variable speed, and it will fix that sticking problem as well.
