The special spring is used to provide compression for the spool to recede into the housing when bumping more string out of the trimmer head. This spring is sold as an individual replacement part, and will come with the complete trimmer head assembly. Please see model diagram for associative parts.

Pressed the two tabs inward and pulled the black ring from the hub. Inserted the new button in the line reel and re-installed the black retaining ring.
Repair complete.
The rest of the parts will be installed onto my other weed eater as a complete unit. These hub assemblies are the easiest to re-string of any that I have ever used.
