I want to replace the blade on my Skilsaw 5150. I have had it for over 18 years and haven't used it that much. Now that I am retired from the navy, I have many projects for it and would like to put a new blade on it. Please tell me how to change it?

I can't tighten my blade onto the shaft enough to keep the shaft from spinning in the blade. This problem has gotten worse over time, so finally I can't use the saw anymore.

If there was some way I could lock or jam the armature or the shaft to tighten and then later, loosen the bolt on the end of the shaft that holds the blade I think I would be OK. I have never had this problem before, but now I'm stumped.

I think I may be to attached to his saw. Lately it's been sounding a bit rough especially when it stops but it started smoking the other day and smelled horrific. I've been using this saw for 2 years now and never changed the brushes on it. I have a sears or black and decker blade on it which has been sharpened in the last year. My FIL said it was the armature that has gone bad. I really want to open this up and replace the problem but it's $24 for the armature plus $5 for the replacement brushes. I can get a whole used saw on ebay for around the same price.

Would this have been prevented if I would have only changed the brushes on it?

Has anyone had any luck fiddling with the 5150 Skilsaw?

Hey Mike,
Preventive maintenance is always a good idea..[to prevent a breakdown] However, major failure of a tool [burnt up] is usually caused by incorrect voltage [extension cords,operating on the same circuit with other equipment ] heavy or improper use, too light of a tool for the work...not wearing corrective shoes..etc..
Replacing the brush's in this case probably wouldn't have changed the outcome..
it might be better to repair yourself instead of the ebay option.. unless they can guarantee the quality of the saw..:)
[except if your tool has more problems then just the armature..then i would go for the used one..]:p

First you will have to get the blade off. I have my best luck with an impact driver. 1/2 socket. Bolt comes out counter clockwise. Check for slippage were the flanges match up to the blade. Could be your blade is to thin. Or you have the wrong flanges.
