Question: Drive Grinds

Johncmccann

I drove my mower to my driveway to change the mower belt and removed grass from the top of the deck by hand, I decided to move it to the grass to hose it down but it wouldn't move. I moved the forward and reverse lever to either direction and I get a grinding sound like trying to shift a manual transmission with out the clutch. I tried disengaging the rear end to move it but I can't roll the mower either direction. With the rear end disengaged I can move the forward and reverse lever without any noise, what could have happened while cleaning the deck to cause this problem? Oh, pushing in the clutch and moving the lever forward or reverse and letting the clutch out bogs the engine down.

I just found out what was causing the problem with my Hydrostatic transmission, I called the manufacturer, Hydro-Gear and downloaded the repair manual for the transmission and the rep told me it was´╗┐ probably the brake stuck on, I played with the linkage on the transmission and felt it release and everything is back to normal.
This part is discontinued. Is there a replacement?

Hello jrb2003,

Unfortunately the manufacture no longer supplies this part. However I have seen other vendors with that same part number on line. Check it out and see what you can find.

Good luck,

Question: Transmission Maintenance

Jeff

What transmission (hydrostatic drive) maintenance is necessary on this model?

None, this machine is probably designed to last 5-7 years or 300 hours. A hydro fluid change wouldn't be necessary until 500 hours approx....at least that's how John Deere tractors are.

I got my 19hp Ryobi started last week but it will not move when I put it into gear.

There is a silver pull pin on the back of the tractor. If you pull it in or out it will allow the transmission to engage.

or the traction drive belt broke, or a spring on the traction belt system broke, or internal failure which imo is not worth fixing if you don't know what your doing and need to pay someone to do it for you.
