Discussion for the Ryobi CS30 (RY26500) 17" Curved Shaft Trimmer
Motor runs / idles fine. When engaged not getting much spin in the boom (when the bottom trim head is attached almost no movement- bottom is just fine). Which is more common to fail upper boom or clutch???
I have searched to see if there is any other muffler assembly that would fit the CS30 RY26500 trimmer but the only one I can find is the 308990011 muffler assembly.
Starter rope snapped, so I ordered the Starter assembly (including the rope) to replace it. I've followed the videos regarding Clutch removal and get stuck on the Clutch plate removal as MY plates look nothing like the 2 skinny plates shown here. My plates have one large hurricane symbol type based with the words OFF 3/8-24 circling it. I've looked everywhere but can't find similar removal ideas.
The trimmer you have has a similar type of clutch found in a chainsaw, that we have an article and video explaining how to remove it.
Here is a link to it.
inherited a ryobi cs30. looks fairly unused. wont start.
cleaned and blew out carb (except did not remove adjustment screws) -looked very clean inside. drained and filled with new 50:1. filter clean, plug looks good-switched plugs-no affect. primer fills with no leaks and under pressure. fuel lines are good, primer stays really full and i suspect is recirculating right back into tank???, float needle lets gas in.
checked for grounding. how do you check for spark?
No gas in throttle, what could be keeping the carb from letting gas into the throttle?
I was luckly and got the off but shaft and plates and blue from overheating even melted some of plastic on cover . any ideas on why ? I also found recoil stuck but put rope back and now work fine many thanks
My CS30 has been running great for 5 years. Now it will only run on full choke & dies when I pull the trigger to run. Replaced spark plug, fuel lines and filter, and soaked in good 2-cycle/4-cycle engine cleaner. No change. Any ideas?

Had the same problem, found these 2 items causing problems
Exhaust loose and letting compression out> Check gasket and bolts
Carb. choke plate fell off and into the carb. unit still ran but only wide open all the time couldn't throttle it.
My edger dropped on the floor and the two fuel lines into the gas resv broke at the resv top. Looks like one was linked to the fuel filter and the other just into the tank. What parts are these?..need from assy output to and thru into fuel compartment. Didnt see on parts breakout.
Does any gas get pumped into the cyclinder when you press the Primer Bulb to prime the engine? It appears to me that the gas is pumped through the carburtor and that it just returns to the tank, which will pressurize the tank so that gas will flow. I get no gas coming from any port when I have the carburator disconnected fromt the engine but still hooked to the gas lines.

It is homelite (they make RYOBI) and is for certain RYOBI leaf blowers and appear that they should fit line trimmers as well. Hope this helps.
Is it possible just to order the clasp at the end of the assembly? The bolt is stripped on both of the ones I own, and I do not want to purchase a entire assembly.
i'm with you. mine is stripped. i've tried to just put the parts together from generic pieces at hardware store but no luck. let me know if you find a solution.... randalfrye@gmail

Hello BengalWACO,
If your talking about the clasp at the end of the boom assembly, I am sorry but this the only way the manufacture sales it. Here is an image of the boom assembly, let me know if this is what your talking about.
The air filter base is held to the tool using the same screws that hold the carb to the engine. Tools that use this base don't have a filter. Ryobi considers the piece of window screen over the air intake opening to be the filter. Not the best design in my opinion...

I ordered a foam filter for mine because the factory screen is not suitable to keep the dust out. The filter from the link below comes with the part in the picture and also the middle section which fits the model RY28040 perfectely.

Ebay seller 'mowers4u' has a foam filter that fits perfect in the Model RY28040. It comes with two pieces, use the inner piece.
Item no. 280731085557
Yes, they are. Your exact carburetor application is the key. If you have the Ruiing carb without the choke lever instead of this Homelite carb, Zama carb parts fit it. One or two kits for it are on Ebay. There are also kits for the Homelite carb, but I can't tell if it is the Ruiing or Zama.
I Had spring break in the recoil. I changed it out, but now when i put the clutches back on when i tighten them down it seems like ther pinching the recoil and it wont wind back up. If i take the clutches off it works perfect! Am i tighting them down to far? is ther a tourqe spec? Or do i have something els wrong? Any help? thanks.
Also the string keeps falling off the recoil? I think i might have it together wrong.
I would verify That items #30, 31, 32 on page B are all installed on the trimmer. These are a small washer that sits against the flywheel, a spacer tube, and a large washer that sits between the clutch plates and the front housing. I believe that these three parts provide space for the starter assembly between the clutch plates and the flywheel. If the spacer tube was worn it could also reduce the distance between the plates and the clutch and cause pinching.
I have a Ryobi cs30 trimmer with 3000a engine. The engine runs fine, but the trimmer head doesn't turn. Do I need just the drum and connector or a whole new clutch? Or maybe a new cable, although it turns when I move the head manually?
Thanx for any help.
Try part number 518824001
It is a homelite part number and I found it in a Ryobi Leaf blower parts diagram. Looks like it will fit Ryobi trimmer carbs as well. Good luck.
Could someone please post the instructions for replacing the thread spool? I'm not aligning it correctly or something because it just spins and the thread doesn't engage.
The clips you mentioned are item #B54 on page B of the parts diagram. If the engine seized you will want to carefully inspect the engine for additional damage. For and engine to seize two of the metal surfaces must make contact. You will find damage to both of these surfaces. If the retaining ring did fall off then the contact which caused the engine to seize was likely between the Piston Pin (Item #B55) and the cylinder wall (Item #B58). It is very unlikely that the retaining ring would fall off without help from another issue. Typically this type of failure is caused by insufficient lubrication. As the engine heats up due to the lack of lube the retaining ring and the piston pin will expand at different rates due to the different metals and different sizes. It is this difference in expansion that causes the retaining ring to fall off.
The flywheel is not staying in position on the crankshaft. I noticed no key way for shaft but grooves within the flywheel. Has there been a manufactures defect in casting of the flywheel?
Mine looks as if there was not enough material to stay positioned even when locked down tight.
My piston looks good. The piston "O" Ring is bad. Do I have to replace the whole piston or can I just replace the "O"Ring. Also the O-ring looks a little fragile, is there a trick to putting it on? Should I put a little oil in the groove before installing it?
Replacing the starter rope on many 2-cycle tools can be a difficult task due to the need to rewind and reconnect a hard to work with starter spring. Replacing the entire starter assembly however is really a fairly simple repair that most homeowners can perform themselves. It is just a matter of removing the shaft, the clutch drum and the clutch plates and then the starter itself. Most folks have the most difficulty removing the clutch drum. We have an article and video that will guide you through that part of the repair. You can find the article and video at the following link...
I see that people on here are having problems with the drive shaft not engaging. However, I have the opposite problem. As soon as the engine starts, the drive shaft is spinning. This poses an obvious safety issue. Please help!
I just bought a Ryobi trimmer SS30 new out of the box, never used, from a private individual. I in put fresh gas oil mixture, it starts and idles fine, but once you pull the trigger to rev it up, it dies. I live in Utah and was told it needs a high altitude adjustment. How do I do it?
Your best bet is to take it to a small engine shop to have the adjustment made. The carburetor needs to be tuned leaner to compensate for the thinner air. The adjustment should be done by a trained service tech as if the carb is adjusted too lean for just a few moments it can cause irreversible damage to the engine. Also most modern carburetors require special tools to make the carb adjustments that only a small engine shop would have.
I used my trimmer for about 1 hour. It ran kind of rough. I shut it off for awhile and when I restarted it, it will only run for few seconds and then stall. I tried to start it on and off the rest of the day. But it would not keep running.
I purchased a rototiller attachment for this trimmer. I hit a rock and sheared the drive cable in the upper boom assembly. I see the upper boom assembly in the parts diagram, is this cable part of the assembly?
Hello: It could be the end of the flex drive cable stripped? The drive tube & flex drive cable are an assembly that can be ordered, it comes with the cable inside a factory pressed in bearing tube, it comes with the attachment coupler included. Go to Ereplacementparts, input your model# and search, pick your series by ser# or motor family in the diagram. They are a little pricey, but compared to buying another whole unit it is worth it. It is a medium skill level job that can be done in under an hour.
My throttle sticks in the wide open position. The cable seems to be free. The attachment device on the carburetor does not spring back to the idle position. How can I fix this?
I have a Ryobi string trimmer. I can turn the expander shaft by hand, but it will not turn the cutting head. How do I get the pressed on head off of the curved shaft?
the clutch spring can break, wedging between centri weight & cover locking clutch link removed spring ends are on the inside to prevent draging on cover running.
#0057004 purge bulb, avail. frm various sml eng shops, even Napa auto pts.hold carb together while removing screws.remove only top plate w thin blade, reinstal screws snug to hold carb together.pull off bulb & rev operation.
I am continually frustrated that every season I have to put it and it's companion BS30 in the shop for adjustment. Does anyone have the tools to adjust or sell a replacement carb that can be adjusted?
Your machine has an "EPA" carburetor. Starting in 1997 The EPA placed requirements on how clean small engines are required to burn. As part of this restriction the carburetors are set at the factory. The carb then either has the adjustment ports capped or they use special adjustment screws so that the carb can only be adjusted by a tech trained in compliance with the EPA directives. The manufacture offers the special carb adjustment tools their authorized repair shops but not to the general public. The manufacture is liable to ensure that the equipment they sell complies with the EPA directive and therefore will typically not offer the adjustment tools for sale to the general public. You can learn more about the EPA emissions requirements for small engines at the following link...
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/f98025a.pdf
Before you adjust the carburetor you should determine why it needs adjustment first. A carb should only need adjustment when it is new and needs to be adjusted for altitude or after a carburetor rebuild has been performed. If a piece of equipment has been working fine and then starts acting up there will be more repair issues than a simple carb adjustment. The carburetor itself will not simply go out of adjustment. You will want to look at things like a tune up, a clogged carburetor, a plugged exhaust system, ignition problems, etc. Adjusting a carburetor requires some knowledge and experience with small engines. You can easily overheat and seize the engine if you are not familiar with the proper procedures. It is also a good idea to use an engine tachometer to be sure that you make the correct adjustments.
I have a Ryobi speed spool trimmer and when I went to replace line I see that below the line reel assembly there is an aluminum tab that adjusts the line and assembly. This is broke and I can't seem to locate it on any diagrams. Is this replaceable?
The biggest challenge in replacing the starter rope is removing the clutch drum. We have an article that should help to make the repair a snap. You can find the article at the following link...
The lower flexible shaft is sold as part of the Curved Shaft Assembly. The Curved Shaft Assembly is part #000998239 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
Was using my CS30 Ryobi when all of a sudden it stop running. I did notice that the spark plug was getting hot to touch. Also the spark plug is E3, and I think the cap maybe a little small. It would run than the spark plug wire would pop off. It stopped working with the original spark plug.
Yes, the new fuel tank does include the fuel lines and a fuel filter. The Fuel Tank Assembly is part #308181004 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
Getting gas !! Very nice spark !! Won't run? Sounds like the flywheel has moved on the crankshaft. What does a 30cc ? CS30 RX30000A engine have to keep the flywheel from getting out of time. Do you know the part number if there is such a part?
Thanks for any info...... Jerry
The Flywheel has grooves milled into it that align with tabs on the crankshaft to hold the alignment for timing. I would have to suspect a carburetor issue. When an engine either won't start or does start but then dies while idling, 9 times out of 10 it is an issue with the carb.
The carburetor can become clogged by dirt or other debris. The dirt may get by a damaged or missing air filter. It can enter through a crack in the fuel lines. Some tools use a foam air filter. Over time the filter itself will breakdown and create debris that will enter the carb and clog it. It is a good idea to replace the air filter at least once a year. If fuel is left sitting in an unused trimmer for more than a couple of months the fuel will begin to breakdown and go bad. As the fuel breaks down it will start to become gel like as well as begin to coat the internal parts of the carburetor with a varnish. The gel and varnish will plug the carburetor so that fuel can no longer flow through it. To get your trimmer running again you will need to either rebuild or replace the carburetor. When you replace the carburetor it is always a good idea to also replace the air and fuel filters. This helps ensure that more debris won't clog the new carburetor.
There is not a rebuild kit offered for your carburetor so it will need to be replaced. The carburetor is part #308054003 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
As part of emissions requirements set by the EPA the Hi adjustment, and in many cases the Low adjustment, are set at the factory and then capped so they cannot be adjusted. What looks like a special adjustment screw is actually the cap that was placed over the top of the adjustment screw.
Ryobi does not offer any separate parts for the carburetor. It is only sold as an entire unit. The carburetor is part #308054003 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
I hope this helps with your repair!

Look at ebay seller 'mowers4u' he has primer bulbs for Ruiing and Walbro carburetors.
First verify that the fuel you are using is mixed with 2-cycle oil at the proper ratio as specified by the manufacture and that fuel is no more than three months old. If the gas is old replace it with new, fresh fuel.
The spark plug may be bad. Occasionally a plug will fail prematurely.
The trimmer may simply be flooded. When a 2-cycle engine becomes severely flooded the cylinder will need to be blown out with compressed air. Remove the spark plug. You will need a spray nozzle for your compressor that will fit snugly into the plug hole. Now blow air into the cylinder while slowly pulling the starter rope. The air will exit through the muffler and will blow out any gas remaining in the cylinder or exhaust.
If the trimmer won't start after this then I would suspect a bad ignition coil. You will need a spark tester to check for spark. If spark is not present then the coil is bad.
The spark plug is part #870174001. The ignition coil is part #850108002. Both parts are available from http://ereplacementparts.com.
There is not a carburetor diagram listed as Ryobi does not offer any parts for the carburetor separately. A new carburetor assembly can be purchased. It is part #308054013 and is available from http://ereplacementparts.com.
The retainer knob is made up of a steel bolt held captive in a plastic knob. I think what happened the plastic stripped out and is allowing the plastic knob to spin without engaging the metal bolt. To remove it you will likely need to break away the plastic. knob so you can remove the bolt with a wrench. Once removed you can replace it with a new one. The retaining knob is part #308042002 and is available from http://ereplacementparts.com.
I hope this helps with your repair!

Hello: Marks comment about breaking away the bump knob can be handled better by putting a cloth around the drive tube and clamping in a vise, then make three cuts with a hacksaw just clear of the steel nut,not deep enough to damage the string spool, this will facilitate removing the plastic parts easier. I have done this three times this week and it worked fine.-- Just another tip, hope it helps others. -Roy.
It sounds like you have a plugged carburetor. The carb can become plugged with dirt or other debris. Gas left in the trimmer for more than a month or two will begin to breakdown and form varnish in the carb. The varnish will also clog the carburetor. The carburetor will need to be replaced to get your trimmer running again. When you replace the carburetor it is also a good idea to replace the air filter and fuel filter to help prevent dirt from getting to the new carb. The carburetor is part #308054003, the air filter is part #98760 and the fuel filter is part #985304001. All of these parts are available from http://ereplacementparts.com.
Good luck with your repair!

You may want to check and make sure the muffler isn't clogged. I removed my muffler and the trimmer started up and ran fine. A bit loud, but no problem. I will be replacing it very soon.

Another thing to check is the atmospheric diaphragm in the carburetor,if it is a ZAMA or WALBRO,this diaphragm gets stiff with age and won't let the needle valve open properly when the throttle is opened. This part is available through ereplacementparts or other sources, check with your local shop for help.
The machine runs great , however I cannot seem to be able to bring the gas from the tank to the the squeeze ball. Could there be an air leak? Where do the fuel lines in the gas tank go to?
There are several things to check when you can't get the carburetor to prime.
Inspect the fuel lines for cracks or leaks. If you find one bad line it is best to replace all of them as the others are probably not far behind. Check the primer bulb itself for cracks. There is a diaphragm in the carburetor that can become stuck and then will not allow fuel to flow through the carb. If the diaphragm is stuck then the carb will need to be replaced as there is no rebuild kit available for the carb on this trimmer.
There are two fuel lines going into the tank. One is the feed line and has a fuel filter on the end. The other is an overflow line used to return excess fuel to the tank when priming.
Seems to be a problem with all weed wipes or trimmers
I have a ryobi CS 30 here and has some problems starting it I have yet to find a solution to these little engines or carbs what ever makes them hard to start. Pour gas in the plug hole it will start and run until the gas it use then stop won't start again unless you go thru the same producer. Other than a squeezed gas line what have we got.
To access the starter you will first need to remove the clutch drum and the clutch.
Removal of the clutch drum isn't too hard of a project at all if you know a few tricks first. The drum is held in place by a screw at the base of the hole on the end of the clutch drum. I believe your model of trimmer will require a Torx #T-25 driver to remove the screw but it could be a hex drive or Phillips as well. The screw will remove with a counter-clockwise rotation. When you try to rotate the screw the engine will likely rotate as well. Here is where a trick comes in. Remove the spark plug from the engine. Now find a piece of small rope, like an old shoe lace. Put the rope down in the hole for the spark plug. Be sure to leave enough of the rope hanging out of the hole so you can remove it later. The rope will bind up the piston so the engine can no longer rotate and now you can easily remove the clutch drum screw.
The new starter assembly is part #985544001 and is available from http://ereplacementparts.com.
The shaft that drives the trimmer head has came disconnected from the flexible shaft in my curved trimmer attachment.I want to know what sort of fastener locks them together.
I need your help putting the trigger spring back on the trigger the propper way so the trigger releases once let go. I took the handle assembly off to change the switch, the trigger spring popped off and I cannot figure out which way it goes on. If there is a picture of that assembled trigger or instructions please.:)
Removal of the clutch drum isn't too hard of a project at all if you know a few tricks first. We have prepared an article and video that will provide you with all of the information you will need to remove the clutch drum. You can find the article and video at the following link...
I was able to get the clutch plate off. The rope trick is used in airplane engines when you have a stuck valve and you want to get it moving again. My question is that the handle come off the starter rope and I cannot figure out how to rewind it. I have spent some labor getting the gas tank hoses replaced and not to leak only to have the starter unwind. Any help would be appreciated.
I am having the same probem. I need to work on the recoil start. Rope came off and is wraped around the shaft. I have removed part 24 (page 3) but can not get part 5 (page 3) off. It seems free but is hung up on something. Any tips or tricks in getting it free?
