Discussion for the Ryobi 875r (41CD875A034) Handheld Trimmer
I need a new starter housing assembly for my Ryobi 875r, 41CD875AD34 part # 753-04154 but I noticed it is obsolete and not available. Is there a replacement such as #791-182367 or am I out of luck and have to trash the machine? I just ordered a new clutch and was in the process of installing it when I noticed the recoil was not working as it should and the housing was all chewed up from the broken springs.
I think you needed to turn the pulley that the rope was wrapped around counter-clockwise about 4-5 times, or until you feel the recoil spring that's underneath that pulley, feel like it has tension on that spring. You need to hold that pulley so it doesn't retract until you string the rope through the hole in the pulley. Once you have the rope strung through, then you slowly release pressure off that pulley. That will start to retract the rope and give you the tension you need. At least that's how I performed the task and it worked for me.If you're not getting any tension when turning the pulley counter-clockwise, then you probably have a broken recoil spring lip, or that lip came out of the hole where it needs to be inserted.

... just replaced the upper drive shaft assembly (boom) on my Ryobi 875r 4 cycle gas trimmer ... very easy ... however, the instructions state: "Before installing your new upper boom you need to remove and discard the Spring that is directly in front of the clutch drum. This spring IS NOT to be re-installed with your new upper boom. Please refer to the Parts List for your unit." The problem is I see no listing for a Clutch Drum or a spring other than the springs which operate the bump head but those are nowhere near the clutch which I'm assuming is near the engine. Please advise. Thank you.
The spring has a squared end and a straight end. As I recall the squared end wraps around the plastic trigger. There's a raised square edge on the trigger and the squared end of the spring wraps nicely around that, the straight end butts up against the bottom of the cover. Naturally you have to bend it a bit to put the tension on it to operate. Not too difficult but it's small so it's bit tricky especially if you have fat fingers.
I can start the trimmer and it will run until I put the throttle on B or C. Then the engine cuts out. I had the carburetor cleaned and replaced the gas lines and filter. The engine still quits when I try to put the lever on B and C.
I had the same problem and found that a Walbro 188-12-1 primer bulb is a perfect fit for the 875r.
Hope this helps.

SEARS #71/358 530047721, primer bulb from a few years ago. They also had the fuel lines packaged in 2 different sizes, sorry no part number for the fuel lines. My local ACE Hardware now has a good assortment of these mini-hoses. Of course there is always "ereplacementparts", which I discovered a few weeks ago, friendly top notch service, and very economical shipping via USPS as one of their options!
If you are replacing this line and filter, wait and think on how it is installed. If you have the money just order the complete fuel reservoir and both lines. If you do not have the money for the whole system, then insert a small piece of string down the center of the Fuel Pick-Up Line with Filter and use electrical tape to secure to the tubing and string. and pull it through. Good luck and take a deep breath.
I just cut a length of #10 copper wire, stripped the insulation off one end and fed it through the hole in the tank and out the filler neck. Push the new tube on the stripped end of the wire and push/pull the wire out the hole in the tank and it is done. Just took a couple minutes to replace both fuel lines.
I'm replacing broken slider (753-04257) on Ryobi 875r trimmer. Can't figure out how/where to install the small spring (791-181459) which somehow fits inside the outer spool eyelet assembly and "under" the slider. No apparent place to fit/hold the spring. Can anyone help?
Turn the outer spool upside down. The spring fits in one of the longer rectangular channels. The protrusions on the open end will hold the spring in place until the slider is put in place. Mine was located in the left channel. The legs underneath both sides of the slider would fit in both open ends of the channels. I have an extra spring on order as I may have lost one of the 2 when broken pieces of the slider fell out when the inner spool was removed. I'm not sure on the correct number of springs but the left channel shows wear and not on the right. The parts manual only shows 1 spring. Does anyone else care to chime in?
both gas line are broken. i bought parts, two lines. one with the filter? on it and a plain one. i put the one with the filter on the left most intake which is angled toward the right side of the motor. the other line i put on the intake above the hole on the left. have tried to pump the button but cannot seem to get any gas thru the lines. i am wondering if i have them reversed. i installed it this way based on coversation with a certified ryobi shop in town. help???
The filter should go on the one that's taking gas into your Carburetor. If you disconnect the hoses and push the primer; one should push the other should pull in air. You might have to clean your Carburetor. Hope this helps.

I'm ordering the same parts right now. My trimmer is on the bench with broken gas lines. The intake fits in the hole in the tank farthest from the engine. While you're messing with it, gets some carb cleaner, pop out the air cleaner, and spray the carb down good. Put in a new air cleaner and it should fire up like it used to. Mine is very old and extremely reliable. That little engine just wants to run. While you're at it, check the oil level. Keep it topped off, but don't over fill. And store it sitting level. I had mine stored standing up (took less room) and the oil drained into the cylinder. I couldn't turn it over until I took out the spark plug and got the oil cleaned out.

The line at the rear of the tank, closest to the engine, goes to the lower fitting. The other line goes to the top fitting. If you have the lines reversed the primer bulb will not push fuel through the lines.

DO NOT SPRAY THE CARB WITH CARB CLEANER. It is plastic composite, the carb cleaner fluids are designed for use on metal parts. You will degrade all o-rings on throttle barrel, o-ring sealing it, and manifold. Use a more benign cleaner.
Feed the new line into the tank, and hook it to pull thru cap opening. then install filter, and pull back until filter sits in tank bottom. then cut to fit to fitting.
Alchol in fuel rots leaving residue in your tiny orifices. Get the kit, plus not included button primer valve, and the bulb. Only use carb cleaner on metal parts.
I've got a Ryobi 875R, I put in a carb rebuild kit. It starts ok but will only idle. I can't get it to speed up. Does anyone have a parts breakdown of the carburetor? It runs ok but one go above idle. Any ideas? There is a tube that enters the bottom of the airbreather and comes from the bottom of the engine. Is this using engine suction to operate the carb? The accelerator linkage is hooked up and in fact if I release it from full throttle it dies. Help.
I own an Ryobi 875R and the recoil assembly failed. I need a new housing assembly. The plastic housing assembly center is deformed. I have received the new recoil assembly and spring but need this new housing. According to the parts list this housing is part 753-04154 and this part is obsolete and not available. What are my options? Ryobi 875r, item 41AD875A734; SN 312Y0209032. Is there a substitute? Thanks. Rich
When my Ryobi 874r trimmer was new, it was awesome. I really liked the fact that I only had to use gas in the engine and oil in the oil reservoir like a lawnmower. Now the trimmer is two years old and it quit working while I was edging. I found that the gas lines were rotted so I replaced them. The 875r continued to cut out after I started it. Then I had the carburetor cleaned and it still cuts out on me. I have looked for a repair shop in San Antonio and have been told by a couple of small engine repair shops that nobody in San Antonio will work on Ryobi because it is too expensive. Now I have this trimmer/edger that does not work. An expensive investment for only getting two years worth of use out of it.
I purchased the 875r appox. 7 years ago, I run a small lawn care service, and cut with it about 4 days a week. I was running Shindawa, I have 4 of them hanging in my shop beyond repair, the 875 just keeps on going, never a problem till now, and this is fixable [upper shaft]. I hope I can still find this trimmer in this same form.
Best trimmer I've owned! Had the trimmer for several years now and replaced the bump head (line feed) once, and the gas lines once, and two spark plugs. Would suggest buyers purchase wear and tear parts like the bump head before you need it so you can replace it and keep on trimming.
