the saw quit oiling. how do you know if the pump is bad or something else?
Start by removing the chain and bar. Notice that the bar has some small holes in it by the mount. Those holes allow the oil to enter the groove in the bar where the chain drive links are. Make sure that the holes are not plugged with sawdust or dirt. Next find the opening on the saw body where the oil comes through and to the bar. The opening will line up with the holes on the bar. Make sure that it isn't plugged. Once everything is clean, fire up the saw and see if any oil comes from the oiler hole in the saw body. If you don't see any oil then you likely have a bad oiler. The oiler is item #56 on page A of the parts diagram, part #530071891.
I hope this helps!
Review: Poulan - PP4218AV HELD UP TO MOR...
The literature on this saw says it's intermittent / moderate duty. I ran this saw hard, cutting some big logs, and ran it full throttle often more than max recommended. This saw was bought in '06, and has cut many cords of hard maple. I used a good synthetic 2 cycle oil, and perhaps the part of the reason for such good luck with starting and endurance. Kept the air filter very clean and premium gas mix. Great price and performance for this level saw.
