Discussion for the Porter Cable FN250B 16 Gauge Finish Nailer
The safety assembly fell out and I lost the retaining ring. Can somebody help me to show me how to take the parts apart to install a retaining ring? Do I need special tool? I tried to push the spring pin out in order to install a ring but no luck. Thanks for any help.
I have an older Porter Cable FN250 type 1. The nail driver will not retract. There is a little plastic or nylon cup that sits on top of the drive piston. It is fractured. I am trying to find a replacement and also replace any O-rings, etc. that should be replaced while I have this thing apart. Is there a rebuild kit that includes this plastic cup and essential O-rings and other parts?
My Porter Cable finish nailer misfires the majority of the time. I will turn the air pressure control up and it will work for a while and then start the misfiring again. Any suggestions on what I can do to get it to work correctly?
You may have broken the check seal. Without that, the piston will not retract all the way causing a misfire. Also check to see if there is a piece of nail stuck in the nose.
Let me know how it goes.

Well...I got tired of trying to figure it out. It is now on Ebay. I started the bidding at $30. You win some and lose some. :) Thanks for the help.
The nailer fires a nail about 85% of the time. Sometimes when the trigger is pulled nothing happens. There is no tension on the trigger. After I replace the nose of the and fire it several times , it will fire another nail. Any idea what is causing this?
i know this simple but check that the nails are sliding in proper groove for the nails because if not that will cause what your saying , i know i did it myself the nail heads did not sit in the top slide
I just rebuilt the trigger of my Porter Cable FN250B Pneumatic nailer and fixed the original problem. But now it leaks air massively even after great care reassembling it. I did reuse one itty-bitty o-ring and one other, both of which looked OK. If I have to take it back apart, should the new o-rings be still good?
Having no grease to use, I used a very thin faucet repair lube on the assemble upon putting it back together. OK?
Hey sbhayden1,
Not sure on the faucet repair stuff..but the o-rings do need an oil base grease..i use a synthetic grease...[most o-ring kits come with a small tube of lube].. sometimes it takes a coupla times of reassembly to get it right...one repair trick is to put a little air tool oil on the o-rings [piston ring also] with any nails removed from the mag..push the safety down, pull the trigger and then plug in the air hose..the gun should fire and automatically reset the cycle of the tool..also hitting the tool with a rubber mallet with the air attached sometimes will "seat" the o-rings..
hope this helps?:)

Thanks, but I tried and it did not work this time. I'll do as you suggest and make sure to put in the right lube after replacing the o-rings again.
My 16 ga FN 250b nailer will only cycle every 6 or 8 attempts and then only when held vertically. I have replaced the maintenance kit of bumper, driver, gasket, handling all parts carefully and making sure they were all lubed well. I carefully torqued all bolts sequentially. Pulling the trigger usually gives only a tiny spurt of air and nothing else. Any counsel?
Your trigger assembly might be your next unit of choice to change, sometimes the seal in the unit goes slack, additionally, there's a particular position the unit is suppose to be facing and that might be the prob.
hope this helps

Another suggestion, have you verified the pressure comming from your compressor to the rear of the nailer? should take a look at that if you have not.

Thanks for the counsel.I'll check the trigger because the air pressure operated other air tools just fine.
