Discussion for the Porter Cable CPF6025VP TYPE 1 6 HP 25-Gallon Oilless Vertical Air Compressor
i had a person give me a porter cable model # cpf6025vp both capacitors were disconnected as the run capacitor was burned out went and got the replacement part that i needed but seems no one knows how they get hooked up to the motor or the centrifugal switch that's in the plastic cover on the back of the motor .any help with this would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advanced George
As soon as you turn the compressor on, it hums and trips the breaker. On the back of the motor there is a capacitor bank. According to the parts list, I have to by the entire motor to get this. Is there anyway I can buy just the bank? For the price they want for a motor, I might as well buy a whole new compressor. Thank you for assistance
I have a Porter Cable CPF6025VP compressor that will not start when there's pressure in the tank. It starts and runs fine when it's empty or partially empty. Any suggestions?
Your wire size may be too small causing a voltage drop.

I had the same problem. After much trial and error, I foud that the plastic device that holds the capacitors on the back of the motor had broken where the bottom bolt attaches it to the motor. This allowed the plastic device to move away from the motor and kept the motor from starting with more torque. Fixed the plastic device (super glue) and all is well.

Could it be a capacitor?
Thanks

I have a cpf6025, 25 gal., 135 psi upright compressor. It will not kick off, I have to unplug it to get it to stop pumping and plug it back in to get it running again. Does anyone know what's wrong? What part would I need?
After the tank compresses to 135psi. the pressure does not hold. The tank will gradually lose pressure. Example: Trying to maintain a pressure of 20psi.
It sounds like your regulator as broken. It will need to be replaced. The part number is #D27253 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
I have tighten up all of the fittings and I have replaced the drain valve. No signs of where the air is going. The unit pumps up to 110 psi just fine. After several hours (5 or more) I go and check and unit is back at 0 psi. Any suggestions as to where the air is leaking?
Thanks
I would suspect that the check valve may be leaking. It will allow air to leak back to the cylinder head where there is a small vent hole which allows the air to escape. The check valve is part #A19712 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.
I have a porter cable air compressor model #cpf6025vp. The problem I have is that it will pump up just fine when you start with no pressure in tank. Once there is pressure and it drops the compressor turns back on but can not build up the pressure and the motor sounds funny and eventually blows the breaker. Any advice?
I am not positive what is causing the problem on your compressor but I do have an idea you could try. It is possible that the check valve, item #20, may be not closing which would let air bleed back into the cylinder. The motor may not be able to overcome the pressure caused by the the bleed back air. You could try replacing the check valve and see if that solve the problem. It is part #A19712.
If the check valve isn't the culprit then I would next suspect a problem with the motor itself or even a damaged piston and cylinder.
Let us know what you find.

The pump works and it doesn't appear to have any leaks, but the pressure doesn't want to go to 135. It'll max around 40 no matter how much the pump keeps working, what could be the problem?
It sounds like your piston & cylinder have worn out. They are sold as a repair kit. The kit is part #KK-4835 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.

I have a Porter Cable Air compressor, Model CPF6025VP that is 8 years old. It has never been used commercially. I have it in my home. It has always pumped up to 120lbs and automatically shut itself off. Today for the first time it pumped up to 80 lbs and ran continually, so I shut it off and tried it again. It still pumps only 80 lbs and will not shut off. I have checked for leaks and found none, and it will hold the 80 lbs pressure after you shut it off and does not leak down. Can you help me with this problem? Thanks in advance.
The pressure switch goes bad after a while,,,,,,,the diapham may have failed or the reed vales in the pump may have given up the ghost or about too,,,,,,,,,,,,,I sent my craftsman back to the shop ,128 dollars later my son in law got a good air compressor and I got a new one for 298 dollars ,,,,,win some lose some ,,
I have a Porter Cable cpf6025 Air Compressor (upright 25 gallon 135 psi) that has an electrical issue that i have not been able to isolate. The air compressor will run fine once it is running and will occasionaly refill tank without any issues. The majority of the time the compressor will blow the circuit immedialty upon turning the power switch on. I have brought it to the dealer and they cannot get it to fail. I have tried multiple outlets in my house, all of which the same issue arises. The compressor is on a 20 amp circuit with a 20 amp outlet 4 feet from the circuit breaker panel (200 amp). I am able to run all of my other power tools with no problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Hey handyman,
These air compressor's have a max rating of 15 amps running..if there is anything else running on the same circuit at the same time it will trip..also sometimes these will run a little higher on the amps and your breaker is just getting over worked..if the dealer checked everything and said it was okay..you only have your power source to blame..if you compressor is having to run a long time to refill an empty tank your breaker may heat up and trip..it may be weak..but since you said it does it on all of them that might not be the case..it may be time to have an electrician check it out and see if a new or higher breaker is recommended..but first find out what you air compressor is actually pulling for amps..check it just before it shuts off..that will be the maximum reading..
hope this helps?

The compressor is the only thing on the circuit and the only time it blows the breaker is on the intial turning on of the switch. The manual says that it should be able to run on a 15 amp circuit, which made me think that there should be no problem with it being on a 20 amp circuit. I have a friend who has a craftsman compressor (same ratings) that is having the same exact issue at his house. I have changed (updated to new breakers) just to verify the condition of the breaker and had a new 200 amp panel put in 3 years ago. Is there a different type of breaker that might be installed ( currently have a HACR)?

The hacr is a slow blow type breaker..I'm afraid you will have to go back to the dealer or service center and have them recheck..the problem may not have shown up during their inspection..make sure you get an amp reading from them..you might have a check valve leaking a little bit [air back out of the tank into the pump and it causes back pressure so the comp is trying to start but under a load and that's why the breaker trips?!] There could be other reasons why also the pressure is not being released from the pump head and not bleeding off causing a problem...ugh ..you can also try contacting a factory rep for Porter-Cable [dewalt] and see if they have any suggestions..they might authorize a warranty repair or replace..
Hope this helps? and good luck..!

My 5 year old compressor just stopped working. Won't turn on yet there is power to the motor. No hum, noise of any kind, just plain dead. Would it be logical to sort this out by replacing the capacitors or is there a good chance that the motor is dead? Worked fine the last time I used it, no sign that it was ready to die.
I would suspect either the capacitors or the start switch within the motor. Your best bet is to take the motor into a motor shop. They can diagnose the problem and repair it. The parts to make the repair are not available from Porter Cable as they purchased the motor from a third party when they built the compressor. A motor shop will be able to get the parts.
I just bought a porter cable cpf6025vp for fifty bucks, the guy really let it go, the valve plate is trashed, the piston and sleeve are toast its missing a bolt or two, The motor works great and it does hold air. Now on to my question, Instead of buying all the parts to rebuild the pump (which doesnt look like it will last very long) couldnt I just replace it with a different pump and still use the same motor? Any recomendations on a replacement? I kinda want to find an oil filled. I am a welder so I can fab up some brackets for a different pump. Thanks for your time
I don't know if that could be done. Hitachi has a large selection of small, oil compressors. I looked through a few of their parts diagrams but none of the pumps are available as assemblies. Buying one as parts and assembling it would be pricey to say the least! I can also see problems with mating your motor to a different pump. Almost all of these smaller compressors have the piston driven directly off of the motor shaft making the mounting very compressor specific.
I would be interested to hear if you can get it to work!
Good luck!

The end of the shaft from the motor is threaded for the plastic fan. I can eliminate the fan and the part that hold the piston. Then fab up some brackets to hold a pump either above or right next to the motor, attach a pully onto the motor and go from there. Once I get a pic of the finished work I will post it up. There are some pumps on ebay that should do what I am looking for. Plus the pump should last longer than what they put on from the factory
