I traced the problem back to an intermittent start switch circuit on the motor. Sometimes the extra capacitor kicks in and sometimes it doesn't. This switch is centrifugally activated by motor rotation. Can't find a replacement part either in Porter Cable or GE motor to purchase a new switch assembly. Porter Cable doesn't list the motor, and can't seem to get any help from GE. Does it make sense to throw away the compressor because of an intermittent switch? If I do, I won't buy Porter Cable again! Anyone know how to get a switch?

Hi cloudhome,
If I remember right most of that style motor has an adjustable centrifugal capacitor switch. The switch has a closed circuit when the motor is at rest. When the motor starts, current charges the capacitor, starting the motor. At a preset RPM the centrifugal dogs will move out opening the circuit and cutting current to the capacitor. When the motor shut off and slowed down, the dogs would move back in and close the circuit until the motor started again.
The trouble with a lot of the centrifugal switches was over time the contacts would get burnt and pitted and make poor contact thus not allowing a closed circuit to exist. Also most of the centrifugal dog assemblies sit on the output shaft and can be moved forward or backward depending at what RPM you want the circuit to open up at. The adjustment is done with an allen screw that you can loosen and make the adjustment. often over time the screw will loosen allowing the dogs to move on the shaft throwing the switch adjustment off.
Again I'm not quite sure how yours work but as long as you don't see anything broken it can be a matter of cleaning up and resetting the centrifugal switch. Hope that helps you some.Good luck.

Question: Question

CTrooster

My compressor starts fine, runs up tp pressure and stops like it should, but there is no air getting to my tools.
Any ideas?

Question: Run Time

Curly69

My compressor seems to be taking forever to reach 135 PSI how long is normal from start up?
It does have a lot of use on it and still starts up good so a repair I will do.

Hi Curly69,

That sounds like a worn Piston Ring and Cylinder to me. To find the correct parts for your compressor punch the model number into our Parts Finder and then select the correct Type number for your compressor.

I hope this helps!

Question: COMPRESSOR WONT SHUT OFF

JOSH MOON

My compressor wont shut off. I was told to buy a switch rebuild kit. Is that right?

Question: Stops Running

Mark Lind

My compressor will work fine for a while, then slows down and quits, like it is seizing up. Bad bearing or what?
Thanks

the check valve is dirty; just clean it

Question: Air Presure

wdt

My compressor runs to 40lbs and sounds like it starts to labor but will not go any higher on air pressure.

Question: Tank

Richard Jensen

I have a pin hole in my bottom tank beside the weld. It is number 1 in the diagram. But I do not see it on the parts list, could you please help with this. Thanks

Question: Piston

David Miller

Do you sell the piston rings individually or do you have to buy a whole new piston?

Reply: Piston

Mark

Hi David,

The rings are only available with the piston and cylinder assembly. If the rings have worn you will need to replace the cylinder anyway as it will have also worn. the piston & cylinder kit is part #KK-4835 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.

I hope this helps with your repair!

Question: Air Leaking From Compressor

D.Fisher

I have an air leak coming from the behind 90 degree elbow which goes into the regulator. The air hose that goes into there is copper and it is not listed on the parts list.It looks like most of these parts are obsolete.I suspect there is an o-ring there that is leaking. Anyone have any suggestions for repairing this unit? Thank You,D.Fisher

Hello,

I think the tube you are reffering to is the outlet pipe (part #D20694, item #16 on the parts breakdown). It is attached to the regulator with a compression nut (item #17 part #SSP-7821-1), and a rubber o-ring (item #15, part #SSG-3105) on the parts diagram. I would guess that it is either the o-ring or a crack or split in the outlet pipe itself that is leaking.

I hope this helps with your repair!

Question: Weak Output

J.R. Spletstoser

The compressor has very low output, I'm thinking that it's the valve plate. When it was working it got weaker and weaker.
Could the cylinder and ring be involved?

Reply: Weak Output

Mark

If the compressor builds pressure normally and shuts off then I would suspect that the regulator may be clogged. Sometimes one of the o-rings will fall apart and clog the passages in the regulator.

If the compressor never builds enough pressure to turn off or if it builds very slowly then it likely has a worn out piston and cylinder. The piston and cylinder are offered as a kit. The kit is part #K-0650 and is available from http://ereplacementparts.com.

I hope this helps with your repair!

Hi,

My compressor won't start anymore without tripping the breaker. It will just hum and attempt one revolution, that's it. If there is not pressure in the tank, then it will start up slowly and once at full speed, pumps up normally. I've checked the check valve, piston, and everything else and it seems to be fine, except I did find a small bit of oil under the motor housing covering the capacitors, so I think it's one of those gone bad. Can anyone tell me how to order new ones?

thx

Hello leejk,

That does sound like a start capacitor problem to me as well. The capacitors will occasionally go bad and leak an oily liquid like you mentioned. The function of the capacitor is to give the motor a momentary jolt of power at start up. If it is not functioning it will create just the situation you described.

The start capacitor is available from ereplacementparts.com.

The Start Capacitor is part #D21216

Question: Start-up Of Porter-cable CPF2340...

Windowman19

Our compressor Lumbers on Initial start up. If Pressure is relieved, it will start & Run, but its drawing too much & blows house breaker. proper cords & lengths are used. Should We R & R Start Cap. K-0196? Thanks for any Advice.

Reply: Start-up Of Porter-cable CPF2340...

cmoorejack

Hey Windowman19,
You may have a bad check valve that is letting air back out of the tank into the head causing it to load up..an easy way to check this is to loosen the nut on the check valve after the tank is full or has some pressure in it to see if it leaks.[.it shouldn't leak at all after the air compressor is full and not running..]you may also have a problem with your valve plate assy causing issues, make sure your air filter is clear also..sometimes the bolts on the motor become loose and causes a rotor shift or bind on start up..! as far as the capacitor it usually is ok and if it does fail the air compressor will just hum at not start at all..
hope this has been helpful..
