Hello! It's always tough to determine exact differences between tool types. Pretty much the only way to do it is to compare the parts lists and look for differences. In the case of the 7301 laminate trimmer, and this is unusual, it looks like types 1 and 2 are similar, but type three contains only 220V electrical components. I've checked this against the original documents from Porter-Cable and it's apparently accurate. This means if you're not using 220V power, you can at least narrow it down to types 1 and 2.

There are some differences between the type 1 and 2 as well. The switches look nearly identical but they do have different part numbers. Same with the field, but the armatures are the same. Depending on which parts you need, you may be able to compare types 1 and 2 and find a consistent part.
