What would make a 2 speed Milwaukee hammer drill smoke and get very hot? Could it be the armature or the 120volt field?

Hi Reno,
Yes this sounds like the armature or field.Have you looked closely at the commutator to see if they are burned?If they look ok you might need to have them both tested.Hope that helps.Good luck.

Hi geskill,
Milwaukee had some issues with the switches on that drill and came out with a switch kit.You will need the first four digits of the serial number from the tool to make sure you get the right updated switch kit. Hope that helps.Good luck.

Question: No Power And Overheating

I have an older 2-speed Mag. and drilling power is getting weak. When last used, drill over heated and began to smoke slightly. Cord was adequate, and didn't apply much pressure. I hope it's only the carbon brushes, because I really like my Mag. (Replaced trigger assembly about 6 months ago.) Help?

The brush holder assembly fell off while using the drill. I set it back in place but the drill is dead. The brushes and springs are still there but I don't know if they need replacing. This a Magnum 2 speed hammer drill #5370-1

My drill just stopped working, thought it might be the switch so I replaced it. Still not working, I get voltage beyond the switch, what would be the next thing to check? I see no fuse or fuse link listed in the parts breakdown.

hello! on the milwaukee magum series when purchasing a new switch it is sold as a retrofit kit for newer and older models also comes with instructions on how to connect and how to modify the handle assembly to fit the new switch. you can also go to the milwaukee power tool website they have the wiring diagrams and instructions. those are fun good luck!
