Question: Hole Hawg Field Short

nathan

I have a 1675-1 Milwaukee Hole Hawg, it shorted out internally and the field windings were ruined also I notice a grind mark across three of the commutator bars, probably from the short. I think I can repair it by just replacing the field and not the armature?
Any advice out there?

Thanks,
Nathan

If you have the old style that has a threaded chuck ,it takes a special tool to remove it.most likely thats the 1 u have. if you have the new tapper 1 just remove screw ,add even pressure to the underside of the chuck .

Thanks Doctor D, And would this be left hand thread?
I'd be curious to see what the tool looks like. I was going to make a tool that slips over top of chuck with 3 pin that go into key holes, with a 1/2" drive for impact.

Question: Milwakee Hole Hawg Broken Handle...

Mr. Goodtool

Hello to all!
I'm a plumbing contractor, with two hole hawgs out of commission. Both have broken right side handles. Yes, when I have the room, I use the brace, to prevent backlash! Sometimes there is just no room... tight corners etc. FYI, this is after 11 years in business.
Milwakee in their infinite wisdom, decided to make replacement handles OBSOLETE!!!
Even on their latest version of hole hawgs.Is there a permanent repair out there you can share? or a source for replacement?:(
Thanks!

Hey Mr Goodtool,
Milwaukee use to have a conversion kit avail which just consisted of a new handle set with the new switch style ..match up your specific ser # with Milwaukee and they should be able to help..[the new style handle and switch should bolt right up to the housing..you may have to use different terminals and a different wiring hook up but it is possible..
also check the ser # with the parts list on eReplacementParts.com : Power Tool Parts and Tool Repair to see if they can supply..
hope this helps..?
sorry for the late response..:)

Hey, I am a master plumber in Louisiana, I have found that Harbor Freight has a orange " hole hog"" knockoff that has full parts availiable at a way cheaper cost than milwalkee and are actually the same stuff. look online.......Jack;
I have a Milwaukee 1675-1 Hole Hawg that runs but gets very hot quickly with no load. I suspect either the armature or field is bad.

Is there a procedure for testing them?

They are fairly expensive so I don't know if it is worth replacing both of them.

You can test the field with an ohmmeter. The ohms should be the same on each coil. Or very close. As for the armature. You need a growler. Look the armature over very closely for burns on any of the coil. Check for a high commutator bar or burns between the bars.

I only have access to the field coil as a whole. I don't see any way to measure each half individually.

R = 1 ohm
L = 6 mH

Is this reasonable?

hi,if youve measured correctly then no as they should both read the same,but you do need to check armature as well as both could be faulty,as one can take out the other

You may want to check all your bearings. This could be the reason the motor is overheating. One bad bearing could cause this. There is also a small needle bearing under the first intermediate gear and pinion. Sometimes the housing cracks and can throw the first gear-pinion set out of whack.
