Makita LS 1214
Howdy: While cutting pressure treated lumber for my grandson's Eagle Project my saw violently kicked back.

I looked it over very carefully and the one obvious problem is it's hard to slide forward and back on the pipes.
The saw is clean.

Possible problems to check out more carefully?
Suggested repairs sequence?

Thank you. Justatad

Question: Electric Brake Not Working

wroname

The electric stopped working. Do I need to replace the controller? Thaks

Hello wroname,

I would inspect your CB154 brushes to make sure that they are making good contact with the armature. If they are okay I would guess that the 651923-1 switch. It reverses the polarity momentarily and causes the motor to brake. Most of the time when the brake is not working the switch is the problem.

Question: Makita LS1212 Smoke Signals

leoniru

While cross cutting an oak timber my LS1212's blade jammed and before I could get off the trigger, smoke billowed out of the end cap's vents (this is the cap directly over the controller module). Though the saw still works, it starts and stops 'violently' compared to the way it was before this happened. Upon partial disassembly, I could not see any obvious signs of anything 'cooking'. The controller looks OK -- at least on the outside -- and the brushes appear OK.
What has likely failed? The trigger switch? The controller? The armature windings? The field windings?
Anything else in there that might account for these symptoms if it failed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need this saw back to 100% ASAP, but I don't want to just start ordering one of everything in it troubleshoot the problem.

Thanx,

leoniru:confused:

Perhaps this might help someone else as it appears there will be no helpful info coming to me on this forum.

First I replaced the switch which did absolutely nothing to return the saw's soft start or electric brake to normal function.
I just finished replacing the controller and now the soft start is working normally but the electric brake is still abnormal.
It appears that I will replace the field assembly next as I read somewhere (else) that there is a secondary winding in it for the electric brake circuit.
I will post an update after replacing the field assembly.

OK, I did not replace the field assembly as after talking to a Makita tech, most suspicion pointed to the brushes and their quality of contact with the armature, so I was going to replace the brushes (I really didn't think this was the problem as the brushes looked just fine) and/or clean their contact area on the armature (I reasoned that when the blade abruptly bound in the kerf, the brushes just kept 'burning' on the same two areas of contact of the armature).

I was using the saw while waiting for a new set of brushes and enjoying the restored soft start function, and voila!! The electronic brake began to function as it should every time I released the trigger. It continues to work as it should. So, it would seem as if the brushes either just needed to 'bed in' again (after being disturbed by removing them) OR they finally 'scrubbed' away whatever deposits were formed on the armature when the saw stalled.
Hope this helps someone else down the road.

Have a problem getting the LS1212 brake to stop the slide action. The inner knob on the front no longer controls it. Any ideas?

Question: Makita LS 1212 Mitre Saw Electri...

oldseahorse

My 15 year old saw suddenly startes stuttering really bad. To the point of not running. It's such a sharp kick in for half a second then pause 1 sec then again over and over. Almost sounds like the brake is cutting off the saw function. Put in a brand new switch. The brushes are about 5/8 " long . This malfunction seemed to happen all at once. Not little by little. Closest repair shop is an 8 hr. drive and they don't speak english and may have never seen this saw before. Any helo would be appreciated Mike

Hi,Mike.Sounds like you have a bad controller part # 631237-4.The symptoms are just as you explained. It will happen all at once the motor will surge on/off fast/slow or in some cases rev up to very high RPM.There is no way of testing this controller except to replace it. Hope this helps.

Thank you tinkerdave. I was getting ready to order one out of desperation. I thought it might be the switch and replaced that but NOOOO it's something else . I've gotten a tremendous amount of use and made alot of money with that saw though. Again thanks  email me link removed
It appears that there is something wrong with the turn stopper. The saw is stuck at 45 deg (mitre, not bevel). If I release the lock pin, it will rotate very slightly, but then stops within several degrees of movement.

The turn stopper WILL lock the saw; unscrewing it to release will allow ONLY the above movements.

When I look inside the base, I see very slight movement of the turn stopper. My feeling is that the tapping screw (#134 on the exploded parts diagram) may have worked loose, or some other related part has dropped out, or a wood chip may be blocking its release, but I cannot see to be sure. I have tried a mirror and still have difficulty seeing inside to confirm.

Is there a known issue with this saw and, if so, is it something that I can easily access without completely dismantling it?

Or can someone tell me how much movement is needed to release te turn stopper. If I reach in with a piece of wire, I can only jiggle it; it does not move freely on its hinge.

Reply: Makita LS1212 Stuck At 45 Degree...

WTF_Ovr

Hey, if you have not figured it out yet, take out the kerf plates from the turntable and remove the bolt securing the turntable to the saw....the entire assembly will come off and allow good access to the underside of the table.
It is probably a chip of wood keeping the table from moving, I have NEVER had any problems with my 1212, I have had it for 15 years and make my living with it...best dang saw I ever bought!
Considering buying another for a backup, this one has a lot of hours on it

Question: Makita LS1212 Miter Saw Problem ...

VtBetaRider

My miter saw brake started acting weird yesterday and by the end of the day was making a banging sound when I let off trigger. It sounds like rocks banging around in the motor. I found a post where someone had a problem like this and they were told either the trigger or brushes needed to be replaced. Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there something specific to look for? I don't want to take it apart without a clue as to what to look for:)
Thanks

Question: Electric Brake Failure

I have makita ls1212 miter saw..Does any one know if the controller has anything to do with the electric brake? or what parts do?

Hey richt64,
The switch is the main component that operates the electric brake..however, the brush's also play a big part..if they are worn down enough the brake wont work properly..the controller is there for keeping a consistent speed under load to the best of my knowledge..:)
hope this helps..

the comment you made in regard to the electric brake on the makita saw, does that apply to all tools with electric brakes. my bosch 36 volt electric brake is not operating, the switch seems to operate well . should i try replacing the bushes, the drill is only just over twelve months old and has only had medium use

Hey craigsley,
If the drill has had only medium use the brush's are probably ok..
I just replaced a switch in a makita cordless with a brake issue [the vs switch worked fine except for that.]:) Replacing the switch remedied that issue..
Check your brush's first just to be sure..but most likely it is the switch..

hope this is helpful...
