Question: Blade Brake

We have a Makita chop saw model number LS1030N. There is a feature, that after the chop, you raise the saw head it has a braking feature that stops the blade. My saw does not brake any longer and just coasts to a stop. I have taken the motor assembly off the blade head and cannot see any thing that looks like a brake or any components that seem to stop the motor travel. Looking at the drawings on eReplacement, I cannot see anything called braking parts, etc., nor have I pulled the entire motor assembly apart yet since the tool still works; it just will not brake.

Hi Ed,

Continue with the troubleshooting on the other side of the switch. Check the brushes. Make sure that they are not excessively worn and that they are making good contact with the commutator. Take a look at the wiring. Make sure that there are no broken wires or even overheated or burnt wires. If everything looks good to this point then the problem has to be with the armature or the field. You will need to have a motor shop test those components.

Hi Don,

Any 10", 5/8" arbor Miter Saw blade will work with your saw. A 40 tooth blade makes a good general purpose blade. A 60 or 80 tooth blade is better for trim work or woodworking.

The blades are wobbling, thought bearings were bad. I started tearing down, got to fan, unable to figure out how to remove fan blade. Any suggestions?
