I need to replace the helical gear on my saw but it is held on differently than is shown in the parts diagram on this website and on the instruction manual that came with the saw, does anyone have any experience of this. Both show a simple retaining ring but this is held on by a collar whick does not to me give any ideas how you remove it without damaging the shaft etc

I have a 10" Makita Slide Compound (Miter) Saw Model LS1011.
I like the saw a lot and use it frequently. It's mounted on to a fold up saw stand, with wheels to transport it, and it's quick and easy to set up.
I really need your help.
Here is what happened:
I was cutting moldings on a job and needed to move to a different location. I folded the saw stand so the wheels were down and pulled the saw across a brick patio. I did not tether the blade case down so it bounced up and down. While moving, the Compression spring (Part # 44) and the spring holder (Part # 45) suddenly came out, flying against a tree, (We were outside) We put the spring and spring holder back in the saw but the saw seems to stay open further than before.
My concern:
It seems now like the spring could pop out again. It could be dangerious if it did this while the blade was running. It doesn't seem safe to use.

Is there another part that fell out? Is it possible to put the spring in wrong?

I have had my saw for over 15 years and have used it extensively.I agree that the 4x4 cut is a pain but I simply add a 1x2 spacer at the fence to bring the 4x4 closer to the center of the blade.The accuracy does go off (rarely) and you can adjust the fence in order to make it more accurate.

I find that the detents are off by about a dgree, which makes it inaccurate. I see no way to adjust it because the detent holes are cast into the aluminum swival table.It a pretty good saw, as long as it does not need to be a dead accurate cut.

I really like this saw. It is about half the weight and much more compact the later makita 10" sliders. The drawbacks are many: that it can jut barely cut 4x4 lumber in one pass, it is difficult to make cuts which don't have a set detent, and that the angle knob is on the side (not ergonomic), and there is no depth lock. It is extremely accurate although the single arm design leaves one wondering how durable it would be on a jobsite. Despite these drawbacks, if you have limited storage space or you back doesn't like lugging 70lb saws you will love this saw.

I an a carpenter and I like the saw very much. I have used it almost every day and it has served me well. I have it mounted to a fold up table designed for this purpose. I set up the saw first thing to just cut studs, or fancy moldings & crown moldings. I have some other brands miter saws but rather use my Makita. Allen Fredrickson
