Question: Makits BJR181 AND BSS610

I have a whole collection of makita 18v lithium tools including the bss610 circular saw and the bjr181 sawzall. both of these mentioned tools have recently seemed to have "lost power" (circular saw more than sawzall) the brushes seem to me in perfect shape. any thoughts on what could be causing this? i know its not the batteries because i have many of them that all charge fine and work fine on the other tools

Hi jcpeterson1,
Without doing a amp draw on the tools and hearing it run my guess would be that the switch is bad. They will some times loose their variable speed or will run fine until you pull the trigger all the way back and they will stop.Hope that helps.

Question: Opening Up The BJR181

My tool has locked up. I assume that the problem is around the crank, or the connecting rod area, but cannot remove the EPDM (#2)Insulating cover. Does not look like it will be easy to remove it either way. Either there is a good trick, or I need to manhandle it a bit more forcefully. Don't want to damage it. Give me an idea. RR

Tool has locked up. Looks to me that I need to take the front apart first, but the screws I need to get to are underneath the EPDM(rubber) insulating cover. Not sure how to remove that. RR

Hi mtrtbldr,

The rubber boot will come off. They can be kind of a pain to peel back. There are usually a few tabs on the boot near the switch end of the saw. You can usually pry the tabs up with a screwdriver. Then start working the boot off. Sometimes clamping the boot in a vise and pulling on the saws handle will made the removal easier.

OK, and thanks, I got the cover off and the tool apart. The blade holder, and its shaft seems to slide back and forth just fine. The crank,#38 in the exploded view, seemed to be locked up, but then loosened up, and is now turning just fine. I do not want to put it together with out making the appropriate repair. Any suggestions? RR

hi i have a Makita BJR181 Reciprocating saw, it have power but no speed(when it newer it have power and speed) then it got real hot, and it dran battary in 15-20 min, does any one know what's wrong with it? i havent take it apart yet, please help.

Hey peng,
Check your brush's first..[once you take it apart you can look for specific problems] If your battery drains down fast you may have a bad armature..look for overheating signs..dark colors and or melted brush holders..if nothing looks obvious you might have problems with your batteries and charger..ugh ..[a qualified service center would be able to check out]
