I have a Makita 9227c sander/polisher that has lived a long life of wet and dry concrete polishing that recently seems to have kicked the bucket. When I try to use it, it just whines/hums and doesn't move. Any thoughts on what might be the issue?
My first guess would be a bad armature. If there is some arcing and smoke or smell associated with the noise then I would be certain of it. If it is the armature you will want to disassemble the tool and inspect for additional damage to the field, housings and brush holders. These other parts are often damaged by the armature when it fails. I know how hard concrete work is on tools. My suggestion if the armature failed is to replace the tool.
What item do I replace to correct the variable speed control?
Unit runs fine at full speed but is inconsistent at slower rpms?
Help!
Thank You in advance for your reply!
I work in the boating world and can't find an extension for the buffer pads that I use. No store holds this part and I know that the part is out there. It has a Female end and a male end; one end to goes on the buffer and the other for the pad to screw on.
I checked with Makita and they do not supply a extension for their polishers. You might try some distributors of automotive detailing polishers and see if they can help you.
Good luck,
WJA

Thanks for the info boater. I will hold on to this for future reference.
When I pull the trigger it starts but stutters like it is being turned on and off really fast. The trigger only works when pulled all the way in. I'm thinking the trigger is bad or the speed controller?
A bad armature will usually let itself be known with lots of sparks and some smoke from through the vent holes near the rear handle. If you tool has not done this and you still suspect a bad armature you will need to remove the armature and take it to a good repair shop. The shop should have some specialized tools they will use to test the armature. One test will put very high voltage through the armature. That will help isolate an open short in the windings. Another test will create a magnetic field around the armature and will find any shorts on the commutator.
I have a used Makita Rotary Polisher.
Speed control does not seem to be responding consistantly.
Full rpms work but the lower rpm, are inconsistant, they work and then they don't work.
I"m am going to toss in a new set of brushes, and a new cord and cord protector, but I am not sure what controls the variable speed?
Any body have experience with these buffers?
Thanks in advance for the reply!
Hi, you have most likely have a bad controller #681801-1 and/or Magnet sleeve # 688110-9. Check the Magnet sleeve first and make sure it tight on the shaft. This is generally what goes wrong with the Makita polishers when they start acting like that. If you replace the controller also replace the magnet sleeve also.Hope this helps.Good luck.
great tool. mounted an 8 " foam rubber "floater" disc for use as a non-digging sander. use stick on paper-cut my own discs from regular sheets- automotive adhesive or contact cement.
