Question: Changing Jigsaw Blade

This is the first Makita jig saw I have owned. How do you replace the blade in this unit?

Hi Walter,

To change the blade, start by pushing down on the lift button, item #23 on the parts diagram. That will lift up the blade tightening knob, item #24. Rotate the knob counterclockwise a few turns until the blade can be releases. Insert the new blade into the blade holder as far as it will go. With the blade resting in the groove on the blade roller, turn the tightening knob clockwise to tighten the clamp on the new blade. When tight, lower the knob back to its original position.

Question: Makita 4305T

The rod will no longer go straight up and down and is now rotating from side to side in the retainer roller. Do I just need to replace the holder and slider?

Hi Gil,

You will need to open the saw up and inspect a few parts. The slider and holder could be bad. The screws may have vibrated out of the holder. The crank may be damaged.

I think you are looking in the right direction. It will just take a little diagnosing to know which part it the culprit.

Question: Lever Identification

Thanks! I got that blade changed with your help. Your knowledge is appreciated.

Next question:The model 4305T Makita jig saw has a lever on the side of the body with a 3-position setting. I believe it is identified as #84 in the parts break down on this site. Does this lever have to be released using a certain method, or do they stick in any given position? It appears to be rather tight in the current setting and I am reluctant to put too much pressure on it when twisting it. Furthermore I'm not sure what purpose the lever serves.
Question #3: I can't seem to find where I could purchase a replacement carrying/storage case for this recent acquisition. Do you know whether or not they are still available? They don't appear to be available through this site.

Hi Walt,

Glad I could help out with changing the blade!

The lever, item #84, is used to turn set at amount of orbit action the saw is cutting with. With the lever all the way in the horizontal position there will be no orbit action at all, the blade will move straight up and down. With each click toward vertical the orbit action will become more aggressive. No orbit action will produce the cleanest cuts but will cut slowly. With the saw set to maximum orbit the cut will be very fast but with much more tearout.

The lever will be a little stiff to adjust. If it really seems tight try turning the saw on and off a few times. Sometimes the the gears will not want to mesh properly. Turning the saw on and off will change the position of the gears.

As for the case...

I am working on that one. I will get back to you with an answer shortly.
