Hi Charles, Thank you for your question. Kerf plates (also called kerf boards) are used to prevent excessive splintering, resulting in cleaner cuts. Using a worn or broken kerf board in your tool can result in a rough edge to the material you?re cutting. 2 are needed to complete the set. It is plastic and has 3 screw holes to secure it to your saw. We hope this helps!
