In my last post I was looking to combine two DW303 Reciprocating Saws together to make a working unit. That was a success and now maybe I can repair the second and make a little money.
The motor sparks like crazy, sounds bad, and smells like electironics burning. The blade movies a little if shaken or just moved around but stops after less than a second of reciprocating.
Thank you in advance for help on this project and thanks to to the ones from the first project.
Hi Rev,
There are a few things to check. If it is sparking as bad as you say, and not moving, it may be the commutators burnt on the armature #1. Or, if the armature and brushes are good, your gear kit #34 might be stripped. But, if that is stripped, check the end of the armature where it engages the gear because it is also probably gunna be worn down also:( . When you get into replacing these parts on these tools, you may as well save the tool for parts and junk the rest because pricewise,it is not cost effictive. I hope this helps,
Gene
I have two dewalt sawmills that I purchased for $10 and both have issues. The first freezes up when you try to run it, on top of smoking and sparking. When frozen and the trigger is engaged, nothing happens. If you manually (pry) the blade holder up, it will run while smoking and sparking.
The second one sounds good but does not move the blade.
Any help appreciated. I would like to combine the two to make a working unit.
Smoke from a motor is bad news ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just too much draw and not enough cooling
rotating of a motor cools it ,,,,,,the bushes and armutor ,need to fit and move without restrictions ,,,,,,,,all this works good when bearings and bushes are new ,,,,,,as time goes by ,wear and tear takes the toll,,,,,,,,,,,,,,lots of time better to junk em and get new ,,,,,,but if push comes to shove ,,,,,,,,,look up the diagram and work from there ,,parts are parts ,depends on if you can put em back in ,,
On the one not moving .......sounds like Pin # 32 is missing
or broken
as the drive pusher moves it is not transmitting the power to the saw holder

Thanks for the reply. I like to tinker so I want to try to take parts from the second to make Frankenstein. I started tonight to dissamble but I am unable to get the blade holder off. I removed the metal nose but it will not slide off because of the blade holder on the shaft. Any idea how to remove?
Model DW303 part number 30, blade clamp kit. Can not figure it out.

Hi there Rev,
There is a cotter pin #27 that holds the blade clamp onto the shaft. If you take a narrow punch, you will be able to drive the pin out and the blade clamp will slide off of the shaft. Then the housing will be able to come off from around the grear casing. ( Just don't drop the pin and kick it under your workbench and lose it in the dust bunnies :p ) I hope this helps,
Gene

Thank you Gene! Used a big nail and it punched right out. The one I though was smoking is not, I am just able to smell the electrical parts. But hopefully now I can take the end parts out of this one and put in the second. If it works I think $10 for a Dewalt reciprocating saw is a good price, even used.
Project was a success. Now to start a new thread for the second. God is good. I have been waiting a long time for a corded sawzall!

Hi,
I have a Dewalt corded Reciprocating Saw (cheapy kind)--don't know the model number, but I have a broken spring (the one that is used to release the saw blade)...I purchased another spring from this website, but can't figure out how to put it back on (since the first one was broken). Anybody have a picture of one they own (even if it is close to the same one I have would be helpful) or a diagram of one??? I have the quick release lever that the spring somehow attaches to, but I can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance.

It's definitely better if I have a model number for reference since Dewalt has made so many different recip saws. Is the model number unreadable on the tool?

Go to link removed Page and search for model# DW303M. This model has the same style of spring, maybe the parts breakdown can help you.

The DW303M is one model that has a quick release lever, but there are others too. The DW303M clamp assembly looks like this:
And the DW304P has a similar setup but it uses different parts and the spring is a little different:
Because there are multiple models of Dewalt reciprocating saws it's pretty important to get an exact model number. I want to make sure you've purchased the correct spring.

You can also try going to DeWALT Reciprocating Saw Parts : eReplacementparts.com and finding something close to what you have. A model number might be required to order correct parts but since you already have the spring it couldn't hurt to check some of those out.

My entry is three years from the first post but the problem is the same. The expanded parts diagram is of no value. I don't need the part number. I don't need the part (yet). I need to see a picture of the spring mounted on the blade holder. It would have been helpful for me to pay more attention when I removed it.
