Reciprocating Shaft
Before you start, download the parts diagram and print it out.

1) Depress Yellow Button on left side of rubber nose \"boot\" and remove guide shoe
2) Remove the 2 T20 Torx Screws holding the end plate \"bracket\".
3) Locate and retain shoe shaft O\'ring located under end plate
4) Slide off rubber nose cap
5) Remove two 1/2" diameter. rubber caps located on top side of Case Cover
6) Remove the 4 T20Torx screws securing upper housing and lift off housing. Be careful not to lose the cam bearing as it may drop out.
7) Remove the two 5/16 Lock nuts
8) flip upper housing and remove T20 Torx screws holding the cam plate.
8) Remove cam plate, remove old shaft, insert new shaft.
9) Align new cam plate with flat on shaft and insert new screws. Do not over tighten as you can snap the new screws. Same goes for the two 5/16 lock nuts.
Assembly is the reverse of the previous steps.
* Pay attention to the alignment of the blade release lever as it must fit into a hole in the lower housing and then the end plate.

Question: DC385 Saw

The Dewalt parts list a 152274-15. My org. saw has the -11 in it, but won't go into high speed. You show a -11 switch in your stock. You also mention a -15 and the -23(cheaper) switch that will work. Can you tell me what I really need and what will work correctly. Thanks

Question: Dc385 Sawzall Issue

LV2GLD

I've got an 18volt sawzall dc385 that will what iI thought run a fresh charged battery down instantly until I smelled the saw. I'm wondering if it's a brush type issue or worse. It does feel like there is alot a friction. Anyone have this issue before? hanks for the help in advance!
Where can I find the two (front and rear) bushings for this Shaft

(Part # 20 * N026647 * Shaft Service Kit (Includes Yoke and Screws) In stock
25 available $33.86)

Thanks! BobOh

BobOh

Bushings are $2.80 each (two needed) and only have to be cut to length to fit. According to my micrometer ID = .495, OD = .690 and they are standard bushings available at True Value hardware stores that have bins of nuts, bolts, bushings, screws, etc. I installed mine w/a steel bolt, and a hammer to hit old bushings out/new in, and sawzall to cut bushing to length. Of course the new nose piece (I guess w/bushings installed) is only $16 plus shipping in some weeks, so savings are light. Good luck w/all your work!
Where are the bushings for this Sawzall listed? The shaft service kit comes wseals only, not the bushings the shaft rides within. These are shot on my unit, and can research bearing/bushing mfg w.OD and ID to replace, but seems might be easier if parts available. Simple first, then move on :) Thanks!
How do I remove the rubber boot so I can replace the shaft on a Dewalt DC385?
BobOh
Reply: Dewalt DC385 Recip Saw Shaft Rep...

BobOh

Just remove two screws at head of boot (where blade is installed) to remove boot. Comes off easily, and then take four screws out of upper case (will be obvious when boot removed) to access shaft. I am trying to find the bushings that wear out (not the shaft) and cause it to have severe movement when occillating. You may not have a bad shaft, just the bushings, and I have posted elsewhere on this page for address of bushings. Good luck, do all your taking apart slow, never force whatever, study it, and it will pay off :)

Question: Battery Terminal

hookem

my battery terminal in the sawzall broke and can not find it in the parts list in here. were can i find one?

Hello hookem,

The manufacture does not supply the terminal from the switch to the battery as a service part you will need to purchase a new switch, part number 152274-15.

Hope this helps,

Question: How To Replace A Part?

John

I have a DC385 type 2 and need to replace the lever(part 35) in the blown up view. Has anyone broken into one of these saws and seen what I will have to do in order to replace this part without having to take it to a repair shop? Are there any additional parts I should replace while in there? Any help will be appreciated.
BobOh
Reply: How To Replace A Part?

BobOh

Lever is easiest part to replace. As above, jsut take two screws out of nose of rubber boot (where sawblade installs) and entire boot will come off. You should be able to figure it out pretty easy from there. I just dis and reassembled the entire nose in 5 min, and cleaned the working parts under the housing. Very self explanatory once the two screws are removed, and then the boot taken off. No tech knowlege required! Go Slow, consider the part and assembly, and the light will come on to guide you.

PS: Put lever in first, then metal nose piece w/two screws, then put rubber boot on. Will have to wiggle the boot, perhaps use screwdriver blade to manuever boot over lever (lightly!) but easy does it and voila, tis done :)

What is the difference between the Type 1 and Type 2 on the Dewalt DC385?

Question: Dewalt DC 385 Saw

How do you Change out the blade holder on a Dewalt DC 385 saw. My saw will not hold a blade in it?
BobOh
Reply: Dewalt DC 385 Saw

BobOh

Tis possible there is too much dirt in the housing to let the blade sit properly, or the lever is not retracting the holder enough to allow the blade to sit under the pin. I had both problems, and sprayed penetrating oil on the housing, then used good regular oil while working the lever lightly, until it all worked as it should. Try it, it may work.

I have a reciprocating saw that will not run at full speed no matter what state the battery is in. Brushes seem ok. Any ideas??

It could be your switch. Or a crack in the field. Or bad Armature. First guess the "switch".

The first time I used it the handle was broken so I threw it in the broken tool ben and thats where it's staying.Terrible design for a handle. It's homeowner quality at best.

The problem with that sawzall is you can't just hold on to it by the rear grip only. Hold the stock as well, then it won't break.

This tool has performed w/ about 75% of the power of a corded Sawzall. I think I might have worn out after 2 years. I probably should have used the corded sawzall for some of the tough stuff I put the cordless through. I think it's a great tool and I'm glad I spent the bucks for it
