Discussion for the Delta 34-335 Type 1 10" Table Saw
I think my Rockwell 10" table saw (series 34-335) needs a new bearing based on how it sounds. I don't know how to get the belt off and get at the bearings. Any tips?
Ken the belt is easy just take the blade off an it slips off the motor shaft and the arbor pulley. Bearing replacement is technically easy it 's just a pain to take the saw apart. The best way is to tip it upside down and remove the (3)- 7/16 cap head screws that connect the control shaft assembly to the motor assembly then remove the 4 bolts holding the table to the cabinet, then before you rip the wires out of the motor, loosen the wiring harness and then remove the two screws holding the motor housing/stator from the motor assembly. Carefully leave the stator housing hanging with the rest of the cabinet. Now you can put the cast iron top on a work bench and take the rotor out of the bearing housing. P.S. When you decide to start any maintenance on your saw, a good idea to first unplug the saw and second remove the blade before you start turning wrenches or putting your hand underneath the table or inside the cabinet.
I just got an older Rockwell/Delta 34-335 table saw on craigslist. It was in quite nice condition for the most part, though it does look like someone let it sit under a drip somewhere (rusted areas on portions of the machine). When I got it, the tilt and raise/lowering of the blade mechanisms were entirely frozen. It was a gamble, but for such a built-to-last saw at $50... I went for it.
My dad helped me get it apart and we got everything operating quite nicely except for the pulley that drives the blade.

I can't figure out how to remove part 128. It looks like part 176 just presses into it and the two are separated by 129, a brass washer. We pried at it a little but were quite hesitant. Looks like that part is hard to come by and since everything is working, I decided to leave it alone.
Does anyone know how to get this off? It looks like it's required to be removed for belt replacement as well, so I'd really like to know and can't find information anywhere.
Hi, 176 is (if I remember right) a jack shaft that rides on two roller bearings. If I remember the 128 is a gates ribbed pulley that is pressed on the shaft. They might have used a set screw on the side of the pulley but its been years since I messed with one of these gear reduction units. I would be real careful about trying to take this pulley off unless you must remove for a bad bearing or belt as the parts are no longer available. I'm sorry that I can't give you more insight into it then that.Hope that helps a little.Good luck.

@Tinkerdave
Thanks for the note. Yes, it is a toothed pulley with a lip on it. The belt goes around it and connects to the motor output shaft. I have looked at the sides while turning it and have not seen a set screw. Nothing is called out like that in the parts diagram either.
I'm leaning toward what you say -- it isn't currently broken... so perhaps I'd better not go trying to fix it!
If anyone else has the definitive method of removal, I'm still hoping to hear it. If the belt ever does go I'll need to know how to replace it and I think removing this is somewhat necessary.
Thanks,
John

And come to think of it,the very early ones I belive had the pulley that screwed onto a threaded jack shaft.

@Tinkerdave:
Ha! I wondered. The pulley has 6 (or 8?) 1/8" holes in the front of it. I couldn't figure any real reason for them (weight reduction?) except possibly being for a spanner wrench. Makes me wonder if it IS threaded on there.
Would it use the same threads as the arbor nut?
Thanks again,
John

Well I'm not sure about that or if they used a right or left handed thread on the pulley.

I'll give it a whirl tonight -- maybe hit it with some lube, let it sit, and see if it moves at all. It does make sense now that I think about it -- left hand threaded so it tightens just like the arbor nut and the end of the arbor has a nice 3/8" hex head for loosening the nut as well as perhaps the arbor pulley itself. I could use a spanner wrench but if I recall, I was just able to slide in the pin from the hinges of my back door that I just replaced. Nice steel shafts that were a good fit. Perhaps I can get one to hang up on something cast and then gently tease at the hex head to loosen it.
My really old R/D saw, a series 34-335, needs a Tilt Clamp (Part No. 442-16-027-002, Ref. No. 153 in my owner's manual). This part seems to be specifically unavailable at any of the Delta parts suppliers I've looked at so far.
This item is also referred to as number 1087581 in some on-line listings. I notice that other people have asked for help finding this part.
Anybody know where this part might be obtained?
Can the part be repaired? It's plastic, and it looks like it just broke. Maybe it could be epoxied back together?
Has anybody figured out a handy work-around for holding the blade tilt angle fixed without using the part at all?
I was able to get the part I needed, so I don't have to junk the saw! :D
I'll put more info in the general discussion forum.

Hi Cryt...glad to hear you found the part...I think i have the same saw but mine is a 12" Rockwell... the part I need is a "bearing closure nut" Part No. link removed the day it was very inexpensive but if someone has it and would like to bear the mailing costs to me i would pay a lot more...it doesnt weigh much and the mailing costs to Calif. I'm sure wouldnt be much ... any help from anyone would be appreciated...thanks rickety
It looks like my old delta saw is not repairable. The part that I need is the "tilt clamp", part #1087581. It looks like this item is just not available anywhere.
I can more-or-less use the saw, but I have to hold the blade tilt with non-standard methods, like using bungee cords to steady the tilt shaft. Not a good situation.
So what do you do with a tool that is one little part short of being totally OK, and likely to stay that way...put it up as Free for Parts on Craigslist? Try to sell it as scrap metal?
What makes sense to do here? Anybody got any ideas?
That is a tough one. That is a very good quality, old saw. My thought would be to take it to a machine shop and see if one, they could machine something to replace the lock. If that is too costly then I would see if they can maybe tack weld the trunnions, locking the saw permanently at 90 degrees. I know that in my woodwork I don't tilt the blade too often so maybe that would work for you if you want to keep the saw.
It is no fun when the parts for our old, good tools are discontinued.
Good luck and let us know what you do.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is a puzzle. I wouldn't mind having a new saw, but I do mind throwing away an old one that is so close to being an acceptable tool.
For the time being I guess I'll just look more at ways to clamp the tilt mechanism, like with a Griptight, or maybe just with a nut and bolt. Then I'll probably go back to pondering the choice between the Bosch 4100 and the Craftsman 10" contractor saw. Or not.

Well, I tried to repair the 'tilt clamp' (it's a plastic part) by epoxying it two different ways, but it broke under load each time.
So I think I'll just use the saw at 90 degrees, like you suggested. Maybe I'll try to fabricate a new tilt clamp out of metal, or at least try to get a better idea how much trouble or expense it would be to do that

Sounds like you are making progress cryt. Keep us posted on the out come. It would be great if a machinist could manufacture the new parts for you. Then your old saw would be good as new!

Well, it turns out that my cousin from Chicago was able to fabricate the part that broke. He has a machine shop and just made a new one. The new part is metal, not plastic like the original, and will no doubt outlive both me and the saw itself. He polished it, so it's even better looking than the original!
The part I needed was the Tilt Clamp. This part is reference #153 in the Rockwell/Delta replacement parts diagram. I have seen it referred to in some web pages as part number '1087581'. The replacement part fits perfectly, so my old saw has a new lease on life, and it saved me something between $250 and maybe $800 for an equivalent new saw. I'm not sure where this old saw should be rated against today's models, but it's a pretty good machine, and I'm really glad to get it working again.
It's not too likely that there are many folks out there who need a new Tilt Clamp, but if you hear of someone who does need one, I would be happy to put them in touch with my cousin.

Hey cryt
Does your cousin still have that shop? I'm in the same situation you were in. Not sure what to do at the moment. Not sure if you will ever see this message as yours was a year ago but thought I would try.
I can be reached at link removed
I need an arbor bearing for this model. The index number on the parts drawing is 176. The old part number is 920-10-061-6625.
Any ideas where this can be purchased?
Hey Tigerfan,
sorry for the late response..There should be some #s on the bearing itself..you should be able to take the bearing into any repair shop for them to match up...if you don't have any close by..just look up the # online and you should be able to get one somewhere..!
hope this helps?!:)
