Hammer drill did not hammer

David - January 11, 2019
Tool Type

Rotary Hammer

Difficulty

Medium

Time

1-2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Snap ring pliers, pick, gasoline

Disassembled all gears, piston, and everything in the nose or the machine. The plastic collar was broken and the eroded plastic material was mixed with the oil as a fine powder. Oil smelled very strange. Removed all parts, cleaned everything with solved (gasoline), put in fresh oil and a service pack as long as I had it apart. Re-assembled machine and it worked fine. Trickiest part was removing snap rings, which due to their location required precisely the exact correct snap ring pliers. "Universal" ones with interchangeable tips will not work. On top of that there is a snap ring in an internal bore that needs to be removed by reaching through holes in the side of the nose piece with something like a pick to get it out of its groove. This is necessary to remove the striker/hammer assembly, in order to clean all the residue of dirty oil off of them. This is not obvious from any illustrations.
