Description:
A carburetor basically consists of an open pipe through which the air passes into the inlet manifold of the engine.
The pipe is in the form of a Venturi: it narrows in section and then widens again, causing the airflow to increase in speed in the narrowest part.
Below the Venturi is a butterfly valve called the throttle valve — a rotating disc that can be turned end-on to the airflow, so as to hardly restrict the flow at all, or can be rotated so that it (almost) completely blocks the flow of air.
This valve controls the flow of air through the carburetor throat and thus the quantity of air/fuel mixture the system will deliver, thereby regulating engine power and speed. The throttle is connected, usually through a cable or a mechanical linkage of rods and joints.

Fuel is introduced into the air stream through small holes at the narrowest part of the Venturi and at other places where pressure will be lowered when not running on full throttle.

Question: Flooding On New W26 Zama Carb.

lenniej39

I own a poulan p4018wt chainsaw that I replaced w-26 zama carburetor bout 6wks.ago. The saw idles & runs great when using it. When I store it for 3 or 4 days in hot shed, engine floods significantly. Is this a common problem w/these carburetors?? I'm very inclined w working on small engines. Thanks Lennie, please respond asap

Hi lenniej39 First of all, this repair forum is manned by only ONE company rep. He is off weekends and is mostly a parts guy. Folks like myself frequent here to try and help others. In other words we volunteer with no compensation.
I also work on engines and small carbs and have a few Zama carbs stored in a Very
Hot Florida shed. I normally don't post this much inside info but felt you should know.
Flooding diaphragm carbs aren't usually caused by heat or they would flood when the machine is running, agreed? Your finding new carbs that flood indicate to me a quality control problem at Zama within the time frame yours was made. Pull it off, open it up and maybe check the metering lever height with the gauge Zama has. The fuel valve must have something keeping it open to flood when stored and yes, diaphragm carb flooding can be caused by a few other things as well.

Thanks for the info which was very helpful. I didn't think it being a new carburetor I would have to go inside of carb. The needle n seat was my next option which I'm schooled on from previous carb. Oh well just something else to correct.

Zama has a tech guide on their site with a troubleshooting chart. The tech guide is very informative. You will be surprised at the different things that can contribute. I just thought of something for you to check. Check the vent in your fuel cap. If the tank pressurizes in the hot shed, and the cap isnt venting properly (which would be understandable given the dirty conditions saws operate in)), then the fuel lines get pressurized .....especially the fuel return line which is connected to the carb in the metering lever side and usually is in voided air space in the fuel tank, not immersed in fuel like the supply line. I have seen tanks that don't vent properly cause a no run condition , with Ryobis being the worst.

I'm also sure a piece of trash was under needle to cause flooding problems when not in use. Also the saw has a New fuel cap which may not be performing properly. I will make another post on this after a few days. Thanks everyone

Hello 1385105,

We don't have a schematic you are looking for. But we do have an article and video on How to Replace Fuel Lines on 2-Cycle Engine. Hope this helps.

1385105 Please just remember that the Remote primer bulb on the saw pulls fresh fuel DIRECTLY from the tank into the fuel pump side of the carburetor (not thru the bulb) and pushes any AIR or OLD FUEL out of the carburetor outlet near the metering diaphragm side (thru the bulb) and BACK to the fuel tank. ALL of the fuel that enters the primer bulb is coming OUT of the carb and going back into the fuel tank.

Hello poppywhite1,

It looks like at one time the manufacture offered a rebuild kit for this carburetor. But unfortunately they no longer supply it.
