spool and cover comes off during operation, what is missing that is not allowing the trimmer to work properly

Hello kfclabo60,

I don't think you are missing a part. It may be that the 385022-03 cover tabs are worn and not locking into the bottom of the 90522788S spindle shaft assembly tightly. Try replacing the cover, that should take care of your problem.

The spool on this tool keeps falling off. From the parts diagram, I can't see any way the spool is locked on. What am I missing?

WJA

Hello 28952,

Basically the only part holding the spool in the Black and Decker NST2018 is part number 385022-03 cover. It snaps into the 90522788SV spindle shaft assembly, in which the 242885-01 spool is in. We have a short video showing how to take this part off and on. It is not the exact model number of yours and the cover isn't the same part number but they both work the same way. link removed to Replace the Spool Lever on a Black and Decker CST1200 String Trimmer (Part # 806474-00) - YouTube.

Hi Mark,
Very helpful video online about this. Thanks for that. I managed to get as far as getting it all open and nearly got the old spindle shaft removed. I can get the retaining ring and washer off the old one, but the bearing (part 144125-02) won't come off the spindle shaft. It slides nearly to the top and then catches there. Any suggestions? It feels like it's not meant to come off, but it seems in the video to be easily removable. Any suggestions? I didn't disconnect the motor, because it seemed like there's enough room to remove and replace the spindle shaft without doing that.

Reply: Replacing Spindle Shaft Assembly

WJA

Hello 1176421,

There may be a burr or some other type of obstruction on the end of the shaft that you can't see. If you have a small bearing puller, it could be used to pull the 144125-02 bearing off of the shaft. If you don't have one, you can often use sand paper to clean the shaft of the debris build up.

Hope this helps,

Question: Grass Trimmer

gpittman

my grass trimmer just keeps feeding line out. There's a lever under the spool but its not spring loaded. Am I missing a spring?
WJA
Reply: Grass Trimmer

WJA

Hello gpittman,

The part number 385017-01 lever does not use a spring for it to operate correctly. It works off of centrifugal force, You may have a worn out or damaged lever. You can replace if by simply pulling the old on out and, the new one should snap right in.

Even if the battery is drained, if you put a volt meter on the terminals of the 90554640 battery you should still get a reading of 18 volts, or maybe a little lower. If your getting an 18 volt reading. then I would say that you need a new NST2018 charger.

I've had my Grass Hog for about 5 years...love the operation. However, from the beginning, one of my batteries only gave me half the life of the other. Now, the weaker battery won't even charge. It's supposed to come with 2 GOOD batteries, but it seems you get 1 good and 1 dud...thus necessitating paying $50 for another one. Too bad.

Question: Batter Charger On Grass Hog

Charles

The batteries on my grass hog will not charge. I have metered the batteries (OHMs) and get a good reading. I metered the battery charger for OHMs and Volts and get nothing so assume charger is not working. Also, when I plug in the charger and attach a battery the red indicator on the charger does not light. Am I right in assuming the charger is bad? Thanks.

I just did it. Sit in a chair with handle in your lap and grasshog vertical. Grasp the clamshell or black tube and pull downward toward your lap. Use electrical tape to align orange piece and black piece for reassembly. Do this before taking apart.

Question: Which Version

Mike

How do you know which version of this trimmer you have? I didn't see any serial numbers anywhere.
Mark
Reply: Which Version

Mark

Hi Mike,

The Type number will be listed on the Model number tag. It should be spelled out such as "Type 1" or sometimes abbreviated like "T-1". If you have found the model number tag and there is no Type number listed you are usually safe to assume that you have a Type 1 unit. The Type 1 will be the first version of the tool before any service changes where made. Some manufactures won't start printing Type numbers until the first revision which would then be a Type 2.

I hope this helps with your repair!

MIKE
Question: Line Feed Lever

MIKE

It appears the lever that controls line feed is worn out. How does one remove the lever? It looks like it might just pop in and/or out but I'm hesitant to try prying on it without being sure.
Mark
Reply: Line Feed Lever

Mark

Hi Mike,

The lever has three little plastic barbs that hold it in place. To remove it simply pull on it with consistent pressure and it will pull out. The new one simply snaps back in place. The feed lever is part #385017-01 and is available from http://ereplacementparts.com.

Good luck with your repair!

Question: Trimmer Line

shaun

How do you put the trim wire on the spool without it falling apart.
Mark
Reply: Trimmer Line

Mark

Hi Shaun,

Notice on the bottom of the spool that there are two slits in the spool's flange. These are the same slits you use to attach the line before you start winding it. After you have wound the new line onto the trimmer clip the line into one of the slits. This keep the line from unwinding off the spool while you thread the line though the eyelet and place the spool back on the spindle. Once the spool is back in the spool housing give the trimmer line a tug and it will pull the line out of the slit. Now you can snap the cover back on and be ready to trim.

I hope this helps!

Reply: HOW TO TAKE APART 18 Volt Grassh...

Mark

Hi Gail,

It looks like there are five screw locations holding the handle together. Verify that all five have been removed. Once they are out, take a flat spade screwdriver and use it to gently pry the two halves apart. Be careful to not mar or deform the plastic housings. Once you get the two halves to start separating they should then come apart easily.

I hope this helps with your repair!

Hi Gail:

Mark's suggestion to use a screw driver to pry apart the two halves is correct. I used a small screw driver to remove the black ring from the two orange halves.
Thank you for asking the question.
And thank you, Mark for providing the suggestion.
Edward
Reply: HOW TO TAKE APART 18 Volt Grassh...

Edward

Hi Gail:

Preliminary considerations:
A) Slide off the battery assembly. This is a heavy weight to juggle when working on the Grass Hog. Also, it reduces the chance of an electrical problem during dis-assembly.

B) The spring assembly inside the orange housing is evenly located on the black tube assembly. If the spring comes loose, it is very difficult to re-position the spring evenly. Otherwise the two orange halves will not come together properly.

C) Unless there is a very important reason to take apart the two orange sections that house the motor, it is best not to go there, because of the difficulty in re-aligning the internal spring, if it becomes dislocated.

1) Put a piece of tape on the black tube assembly and another piece of tape on the orange plastic housing. The pieces of tape will help you to orient the tube and the orange housing when you are re-assembling the two orange halves.

2) Recall that the orange housing can be rotated 180-degrees to act as a trimmer and as an edging tool.

3) When the six screws are removed from the orange housing and the black sleeve is carefully pried away from the black tube (as mentioned by Mark) be very careful when separating the two orange housing halves. Pry the two halves apart very slowly so as not to disturb the coiled spring mounted, inside, on the black tube assembly.

4) If you need to remove the wires from the motor, the leads must be cut because the crimp connector will not come off of the motor terminal. There is enough lead length to re-solder the two leads to the motor.

5) If you are going to cut the motor leads, mark one lead with a piece of tape and put a mark on the motor housing to indicate the "taped" lead.

6) If you look carefully at the motor housing, you will see a red dot near one motor lead. This is the ( ) or positive terminal of the motor.

I just finished re-assembling my Grass Hog, after lubricating the moving parts inside.
The internal spring on he black post caused me much grief. It took a long time until I figured out how to orient the spring coil.

Again, my thanks to Mark for giving me the key piece of information on how to separate the two halves of the orange body that houses the motor.

Regards,
Edward

Mark
Reply: Tube Assembly

Mark

Hi woody,

Looking at the parts diagram, It looks to me like it will be easiest to remove the wires from the motor end. It appears that there will be less wiring in this area and it should be easier to thread the two bare wires through the tube rather than the wires with the switch harness.

Good luck!

Help! My trimmer works for only 15 to 20 minutes. It claims to work for 2 hours. Please advise.
Mark
Reply:

Mark

Hi pat,

The manufactures claim that the tool will run for 2 hours per charge is figured under ideal conditions. If you are trimming, deep and thick, wet grass or weeds you will see a much shorter run time than what the manufacture listed. The more load you put on the motor the shorter the run time will be.

Hope this explains the short run time.

Nelly
Reply:

Nelly

15 to 20 minutes isn't long, I'll grant you that. But it depends what you're trimming. If you have a lot of resistance (i.e., tall grass, heavy or thick-stemmed weeds, trimming against a fence or a rock border, etc, etc.) will, as Mark said, greatly reduce the usage time. Also, I personally noticed that if you keep your finger on the trigger with the motor running constantly (as opposed to letting off it for at least as long as it takes you to get from one "problem area" to another), that will also eat up battery energy.

Hi Mountainman,

There should be six screws that hold the housing together. One of which may be hidden under one of the labels. Once all of the screws are out the housing must be gently pryed apart with a screwdriver. Be careful to not mar or break any of the plastic pieces. Once you get one area of the housing started the rest should come apart easily.

I hope this helps!

The Black and Decker 18 volt cordless trimmer I purchased 2 years ago has been great. Now, when I wanted to replace the line trimmer spool, I see it has been discontinued. What kind of deal is this? This is why land fills are filled. You cannot repair, you must buy new. I'll think twice before I buy Black and Decker.
I knew as soon as I turned this thing on it was bad. No power, I charged the battery fully (twice). I switched batteries and still no power. Poor cutting and didn't last while cutting a very small area, maybe 150' or so. I am so disappointed. The batteries didn't even last one season. I just tried to charge them and they won't hold a charge! I hope Black & Decker makes an AC adapter for this trimmer because I'm not going to buy batteries every season. What a waste of money. I am going to go buy a plug in model because battery models just can't hack it. ONLY ONE YEAR OLD! Don't buy it. You're wasting your time and money!
Overall pretty good product, but the batteries do not last long.
