How to replace trimmer line on GH710 Type1.

WJA

Hello 1317123,

Here are the instructions to wind the spool on the Black and Decker GH710 Type 1.

Remove the empty spool from the tool. First wind the new line onto the uppermost part of the spool. Feed 3/4 inch of cutting line into one of the anchoring slots. Wind the cutting line onto the spool in the direction of the arrow on the spool. Make sure to wind the line on neatly and in layers. Do not crisscross. When the wound line reaches the cut outs on the top of the pool cut the line. Temporarily hook the line in the slots on the side of the spool. Repeat the above for the lower section of the spool. Use only .065 guage cutting line.

If you want to make it a bit easier you can order the part number 90517175 Spool & Line. And just replace it with the old one and your ready to go.

Question: TRIMMER HEAD FOR GH700

GENEPHILLIPS

The trimer head has stripped out and I need to replace the head how can I find the part and order it?

WJA

Hello 1195815,

If the part you need is the head up inside of the trimmer head housing. Unfortunately the manufacture does not provide that as a serviceable part. Usually it is connected directly to the motor, which is not available either. The only parts available for the head are the 90514754 spool cover and the 90517175 spool and line. It may be time to treat yourself to a new trimmer.

Question: Plastic Cog/Gear

ggrochelle

I have had 2 of the plastic drive cogs/gears just above the spool below the engine on the last 2 grass hogs I have owned. I only used this one for less than 3 hours. I was to lazy to take the 1st one apart but now I know what the problem is how do I get a new one to fix it.

Hello ggrochelle,

Unfortunately the manufacture doesn't supply any of the parts in the motor housing, which includes the gear you are speaking of. You might be able to find a used trimmer and use it for parts.

Hello moran,

Unfortunately the manufacture does not supply serviceable internal motor and gear parts for this unit. Try looking up some service centers in your area, they might have a trimmer like yours that a customer brought in and didn't repair, that you could purchase.

Question: Missing Part

I am missing the blade on the inside cover that cuts the string. The screw got loose and it came off. Now the string just comes out twice as long as it should. Does anyone know the name of this or were I can find a new one?

Question: Auxiliary Handle

When I bought this out of the box, The screw was already placed into the handle, and I'm stuck wondering how to remove it so that I can install it. Either the manufacturers are messing around with me, or does anyone else have this?

Bash the end of the screw (#4 above) that's sticking out onto something hard and it will pop right out. I bashed it on a metal table. Once it's out, snap the handle on the aluminum shaft. Insert the hex screw so that the hex head fits inside the hexagonal hole in the handle. Put the plastic knob - it has 3 protrusions sticking out like a 3-point star (#2 on the diagram above) - onto the end of the screw and tighten it. Now you're all set. There's a rectangular black button where the shaft meets the trimming head. That's how you change it the head from weed wacker to edger.

Gary, I believe you and I might have the same problem, the same broken piece.
I have in front of me right now the plastic disc with cog teeth on the inside ridge, that fits into the metal drive gear -- the plastic disc is broken into three pieces.

I've had no luck in either the toll free service line or the repair center referred to me by that service line.

I'll keep looking, and let you know if a solution turns up.
If you wouldn't mind, please do the same.

I have a grasshog gh1000 type 1 electric weed eater. This model has a plastic piece with cog teeth, driven by a small rubber belt that connects the cog to a metal drive shaft. The head/string stopped spinning. Bought another of the same type, darn thing broke after about 20-30 minutes of use. Took it back and they gave me a new one. Then I took my old one apart and discovered this plastic piece and the teeth on the cog were shot. Very cheap piece and should be replaced with metal part. I am throwing my old one in the garbage.

Question: Spindle Repair

Is there a way to keep the line from wrapping itself under the spool onto the shaft? Is there a way to remove the line from the shaft once it is there?
JJP
Reply: Spindle Repair

You must remove the guard, then the orange housing to allow access to the shaft area. Then work the line back and forth or cut it off, put it back together and try again. I fear that it will just keep on wrapping around the shaft if any components are broken, worn or missing. I'm still searching for a parts list to put mine back together properly. It may not be possible.

Question: Need Microswitch For GH700 Trimm...

Mike Gardner

I am very frustrated trying to find a tiny Honeywell microswitch for a perfectly good one-year old B&D Grass Hog electric trimmer/edger. The Honeywell part number is V5A030CB3X259. It is 1 X 1/2 X 3/8 with two slip connectors and two pin holes for mounting in the handle. Fotunately, when the switch burned, the wires were not damaged, nor did I recieve more than a minor shock.

I have been to the recommended local repair center, (DeWalt, N. Beach St., Ft. Worth) and they have nothing in stock to match. And B&D will not supply "internal" parts.

Any help or advice?

I have the same problem. Did you find a switch on that site? I see a FA336 that looks like it might be the one. I think I will give it try. I have had my "hog" for 2 seasons and still works fine other wise. I give it a workout!

Go to Grainger. Stock #2KRU7. Direct interchange. Original swich rated at 16 amps and this switch is rated at 20 amps. May need to drill out mounting holes slightly.

I have replaced the first gh700 with a second gh700, and am experiencing the exact problem; with not auto feed, wraps around the shaft under the spools assembly, and with not spin! I do not know how to take the assembly apart; I've removed the screw in the center of the spool and the assembly with not come off! I made a bad choice in selection of the gh700!

1. Remove guard
2. Remove spool and line
3. Obtain a sturdy device which will not bend(such as a screw driver)
4. Place screw driver under assembly/housing and proceed to pry
Off assembly/housing by using an upwards motion until
Assembly/housing pops off. You can then remove the wrapped
Line. It may take several attempts to accomplish this!

I bought this trimmer a couple of months ago to use around the house. Today was the first time I used it, and had the same problem. It was working great, then the spindle melted on the head. B&D does not sell a replacement part.

This tool is of poor quality for the price I paid. I will never buy a B & D product again.

Like, others who commented, the gears are plastic and you can't get a replacement part. I bought this one two years ago because the original one I had lasted 10 yrs. This one is junk. I will not be buying B & D products again. I have to give this product a 1 because they don't have a zero. They are beyond cheap!!!
I bought this grass trimmer a few months ago, and was going to used today and find out that the gear inside was broken, I called Black & Decker's parts department and they tell me that they don't have the part. Looks like this model is a lemon.

I found the GH700 in my neighbors garbage pile when they moved out. It looked brand new so I took it home and took it apart to discover the plastic gear was broken as well. It seems like all the gears are metal until you get to the plastic transition gear. Wow, B&D probably thought they would save $3 on the plastic part. Guess I'm not going to attempt to repair and well continue to use my Grandfathers 40 year old trimmer.
I have the same issue as most. Spindle Gear stripped and can't find replacement. This is my second B&D unit. %#%#%#*%$#^&&% Sure it will be my last!!!!!
I LOVED THIS ONE FOR A VERY SHORT TIME. GEAR STRIPPED AND PURCHASED A NEW ONE IN THE MIDDLE OF YARD WORK. HAD MY NEW ONE ONLY 5 OR 6 MONTHS AND YES %#%# GEAR STRIPPED AND NOW I'M JUST MAD. BLACK AND DECKER USED TO BE A REPUTABLE COMPANY... HEY B & D, IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE JUNK, LEAST SELL US THE PARTS THAT CONTINUE TO BREAK.

Yes! I bought a GH700, I got about two good uses out of it before it stopped cutting and feeding. I even bought a new spool of B&D line for it. Nothing works. This is a piece of junk. And the store I got it from wants to charge a $35.00 fee to troubleshoot it. They said it is a B&D problem and unless B&D recalls this machine, there is nothing they can do. So much for Consumer Protection!!! B&D be a responsible company and recall this junk.
The housing around the spindle melted after one summer use. I have been unable to find a replacement part. Needless to say I will not purchase a Black & Decker tool again.

I agree I have the same problem after about 4 months of use, the trimmer still looks new, but it is only good for collecting dust. I was very disappointed when i could not find the replacement parts.
This trimmer has given me problems from the day I bought it. It does not auto feed, so I have to stop. Take off the cap and feed the line. I was able to force about a half dozen uses out of it before the head stripped from the spindle shaft. Definitely a case of "You get what you pay for." I knew I should have bought a Sthil!!

Just had that problem after using up several spools of line going around the house once. Just used it three times before the head stopped spinning. I's sad one has to buy a new one for parts only.
I am very frustrated and angry with this product. I had difficulty with the automatic feed from the beginning and the parts that I need to repair this piece of junk are all on backorder! Does that tell Black and Decker anything?

I used this just 3 times and the spindle has melted from the drive, and I cannot find support. I have a $59 piece of junk. Do Not waste your money on this item.
The Grass Hog trims very well when it is working properly. However, I had trouble with automatic line feed from day one. I solved most of the problem by being very meticulous about rewinding new line, and being very careful not to bog it down. I got only two summers of work out of it when the plastic housing around the spindle bearing melted and disintegrated the keeper that keeps the spindle connected to the motor. Needless to say, I am disappointed.

This tool is quite poor quality for the price I paid. It stopped on me 100 times in the first two days. The spool brke in the first week. i will never recommend for purchase to anyone
I have only 1 problem with this tool. The spool cover. This is the second time I have had to replace this part. The side of the cover is contacting the ground for some reason and being worn out until it breaks. I don't have it to close to the ground during use, but it happens anyway. I see by your website that other people must have this problem also. The part isn't avaiable until 7/21. I don't believe I should have to buy a spool cover every year. Is there a solution to this problem? I looked for a different head, but there isn't one to fit this model.

It has been my experience that most grass trimmers last a season or two max. This one last not long at all. This is my 3rd and most likely last B&D GrassHog. THE LINE JUST DOESN'T AUTO FEED. I'm constantly stopping and pulling out line about every 10 feet. It will start to feed and you think "awesome, it's working!", then... stop. No line coming out. I tried to milk the little nub of line hoping more would kick out and the line cap blew apart from rubbing on the ground. Yes, the rubbing is my fault but if the line kicked out I wouldn't be desperate to try using the nub of line. Also, the extension cord keeps coming out. At least my old one had a cord lock. That was probably the best feature. It's hard to believe someone thought it would be a good idea to get rid of the cord lock on the newer models. Lucky for me, I found this site and will be ordering a new line cap. I think it's funny that they are back ordered. Maybe I'm not the only person who has had similar problems. From what I hear, EVERY grass trimmer, maker and model, has issues. I just need to find the right one for me.

It has been my experience as a contractor that you get what you pay for. If you're trying to save a couple of bucks and you buy the cheap tool, then that's what you get a cheap tool. I have a Husqvarna chain saw that I bought about 10 to 12 years ago. I paid about $350 for it and NEVER regretted it. It sits in the back of the truck all year and has never failed to start. Husqvarna and Stihl are two of the best you can buy. Spend the money now or spend the money again later. Either way you WILL spend the money.
