Question: Black & Decker GH600

floridatwins10

I have a Black & Decker GH600. It swivels to become either a trimmer or an edger. The black latch that you push to swivel the lower part of the unit became pushed in and the trimmer/edger is not locking into place. I have taken it apart and looked at it. It does not appear broken, but it does seem as though something is missing......maybe a spring?? I have looked at the schematic online and I don't see anything, just the black "latch". Does anyone have any experience with this?

EDITED POST: I took pictures and compared them to the online schematic. There are 2 little arms that are missing on the back side of the push platform of my latch. So it IS broken. New part ordered! :D

Question: Brushes For Motor

olson

Why are replacement brushes not available for the motor. Mine has a broken wire that connects the brush to the copper contact that makes contact with the lead wire from the armature. Brushes used to be available for all electric motors as they were an expendable item and would often wear out.

Question: Lead Wire Assembly

Is this the prongs that the extension cord plugs into? One of the prongs stuck in the plug and after prying off, the prong broke off the trimmer and is stuck in the extension cord. Will most likely have to throw the extension cord away but need to replace the part that the ext. cords plugs onto.
I ordered several parts. Some were on B/O. So they say.But last night everyone of my B/O parts were listed as being in stock and still my order wasn't filled. They said they ran out.Now tonight my B/O parts are listed as in stock and once again my order has not been filled. Customer Service Rep. can't explain.
POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE - I'M UPSET.
VERY DISAPPOINTING TRANSACTION.
I have to wait two weeks for listed in stock parts. All i get from these guys are Excuses.

The little while plastic lever somehow causes the 0.65 line spool to advance and feed more line, but how do you know if and when the lever should be replaced? I have tried pre-wound spools, as well as the spools that I wind. I only get a few inches of trimming before the spool jams.

Would someone please tell me HOW TO AVOID THIS SPOOL FROM CONSTANTLY JAMMING?

How to remove what is left of old guard assembly and install new guard assembly? Already have new assembly.
WJA
Reply: B&D GH600 Type 2 Guard Assem...

WJA

Hello,

Not ever worked on one of these trimmers before and looking at the parts diagram. It looks like there are three tabs at the back of the guard that might snap into the motor housing and one rectangular tab that would line it up with front of the motor housing. You might have to carefully pry whats left of the old guard off, then push the new one on. I can't see any screws holding the assembly to the housing.

Good luck

Question: More Feeding Problems

lfino

My problem with the GH600 is similar, but the line won't feed properly because it melts in tiny spots to the rest of the line inside the spool. I use the correct replacement spools, but to get the line to feed, I have to cut off the melted line that's sticking inside, rethread the line, work for a few minutes and repeat. Is there a way to fix this?

Question: 385022-03 Spool Cover

Larry

I have had this GH600 type 2 for over three years and I love it. I've had no problems that couldn't be fixed by tinkering with it.

Here's the only issue that I've had:
The cover broke and I ordered replacement part 385022-03. However, when I go to snap it into place, it is much too large for the spool housing. Anyone know the correct part number?
Thanks

Just pull it straight up (with pliers) to remove it from the hole. Pull hard; the end is a flexible and expands to hold it in place but will come out. Just push the replace in.

Question: Spool Problem

thomasj37@yahoo.com

Welcome to my world. I finally find out Item #29 on the parts list, Part #598435-00, LEVER has to be replaced. It wears and it's hard to tell it's worn by the naked eye.
Just pull it straight out, with pliers. The split end expands to hold it in place.
Just push the replacement straight in. About $3.00 (B&D/Dewalt supplier).

Question: Hole In Feeder Worn Down

Liz

The metal "grommet" hole that the string feeds out of has worn down and now when I try to use the grass hog it doesn't feed the string well. I have to stop and pull it out, etc. Is there a replacement part for the spool housing?
Chris
Reply: Hole In Feeder Worn Down

Chris

Liz,
Had the same issue with the model GH600, Type 2. Use a good pair of needle nose pliers and firmly grab onto the outer perimeter of the metal grommet, do it from the inside of the spool housing. You can rotate the metal grommet (slowly) at least 90 degrees to move the worn portion of the grommet away from the worn area on the plastic spool housing. This should work until the grommet wears again, then repeat as required. Note- It appears you cannot replace the spool housing by itself, you must buy the entire motor assembly.

Question: Black N Decker Grass Hog

My Black n Decker Grass Hog won't automatically feed the wire anymore. I opened up the spring loaded wire feeder and there is a loose plastic piece (598435-00) "Lever". Is this piece supposed to be able to be moved very very easily or spring loaded so that it pushes the wire spool to feed???

Question: Trimmer Not Feeding

Marty

My trimmer doesn't auto feed. All of the parts are there. I have to feed manually. I think there is a spring missing but the parts diagram doesn't show one.
Jerry
Reply: Trimmer Not Feeding

Jerry

The fan which is a part of the motor assembly is not sold separately. If you remove the spool and spring and look at the shaft from the motor, there are plastic ridges that wear out and this part is not replaceable. Without these ridges, the unit will NOT work automatically. You will need to stop the trimmer and pull out the string manually. The next time I purchase a trimmer from B&D, I will make sure that the part I mentioned above is replaceable without buying the new motor which is about 90% of the cost of a brand new unit. The after market part should be around $10. That is better than paying almost $45 for a new motor which you do not need.

I sounds like an issue with the feed lever. It seems to be a weak point of this tool. The feed lever is part #598435-00 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com. You may want to pick up a few extra as they do seem to wear out fairly quickly. The feed lever is held in place by three expanding tabs. Other than cleaning, what type of maintenance does the grasshog require?
Mark
Reply: Grease

Mark

Hi nana,

Your Grasshog trimmer should be basically maintenance free. Like you mentioned, keep the grass clippings cleaned off of it. It is also a good idea each time that you refill the spool to clean up any dirt, mud or built up grass clippings that get inside of the trimmer head. Doing so will help eliminate string jambs and ensure that trimmer head feeds the line trouble free.

Question: No Line Feed

Where do I start to repair my GH600? The line will not feed...I have to stop and remove cap, lift spool and unwind as it will not turn while in the housing. The little white plastic underneath appears to be okay but could it have something to do with it not feeding?
Robert in Austin
Reply: No Line Feed

Robert in Austin

Every time I've had this problem I've replaced the white plastic lever you mentioned and the unit works perfectly... for a while, until the lever wears out again. I keep a few on hand for this reason. I bet I've replaced a half dozen over half as many years. But at ~$3, this unit still has proven very inexpensive. Once you know this trick, you save yourself a lot of frustration manually extending the line every 30 seconds.

Line feed mechanism is poorly designed. Either does not release line, requiring you to open and manually lead out another 8 inches or so, OR continually releases line when not needed - wasting it. I have owned 2 of these (because they were so heavily discounted; now I know why) and they suck. I should have spent a few dollars more and bought a quality product.

Check the spline shaft inside of the spool housing, I'll willing to bet the spline is worn. Which means we are forced to purchase a complete motor assembly for $49 bucks, which was the new purchase price for my edger. I need to do the math? The .65 line at home depot goes for $8.95 a roll. I'll use up to 4 rolls in a 3 month season. All products manufactured today are designed to fail but, after only two years? We're living in horrible times Rick.

I started having this problem after 2 years of problem-free use, using the same big roll of replacement string I got from WalMart. Like I said, no problems until recently, then the string just would not automatically advance anymore. I read online that dried-out string (mine was 2 years old, sitting in the garage) could cause this. I bought another roll of the same brand at WalMart, and continued to have problems. I am thinking of trying another brand of string. I can see when I open the spool that the string gets stuck on itself - I don't think the trimmer is at fault.

As was stated again, and again, and again: GH600 is virtually maintenance free, except for -

The white plastic part found under the where the spool is inserted, known as on diagram as "29 #598435-00.

This part breaks. a lot.

This part costs $3 and you should order extra's to have on hand.

To remove this part for replacement, pull straight up and off using needle-nosed pliers.

You cannot always tell just by looking that it is broken.

Line will jam, not feed, or wrap around the shaft.
