I'm forced to give it a 'one' rating which exceeds its actual rate in my opinion. Just as others have reported, the belt broke and melted the plastic pulley. So is the DeWalt version as bad? Local repair/sales shops wont even carry the cable drive trimmers in inventory. DeWalt/B&D has sold it's last product to me.
I was looking for the belt that I need to fix my almost brand new trimmer when I read all the comments in this forum. I looked at the plastic pulley and discovered that it is also partially melted. Save your hard earned money and DO NOT BUY this tool.
I really liked the product for the first hour. Then the belt broke!
In order to get to the belt I had to break the plastic to find out that the screw was hidden behind a label. The grooves on the plastic pulley wore off. I ordered a new belt but really doubt that it will last at all. Black and Decker has failed with this product and it's doubtful whether I will buy another B&D product.
After the spool quit rotating but the motor kept working (a common problem many have had with this model), I opened my trimmer to fix it and out popped a black cylindrical part, 3 inches long with 3 ridges along its length. I have no idea where it came from or how important it is to the operation of the unit.
The item is not shown on the IPB. It fits just beneath the motor, lined up with the shaft of the large drive pulley. I assume it is there to hold the rear bearing in place and/or maybe to guide the drive shaft when fully retracted. There are three splines on the part, two fit in slots on the left and right housings and the third faces up toward the motor.
grasshog does not perform Question by Charles Spencer
The motor runs but the trimmer spool does not turn. I can hear the cable turning. What do I need to repair?
Alas! You have come upon the same problem that countless other users of this product (including myself, just today as a matter of fact) have experienced. The belt has slipped off of the big plastic pulley. (Why plastic? What was B&D thinking?) My friend, you need to disassemble the unit (the last screw is hidden under one of the labels - but of course!) and then when you discover that the gear has partially melted, throw the entire unit into the garbage and have a couple mugs of beer to help you forget about the folly of purchasing this poor excuse for a machine.

Worked good for 30 min. After I replaced the belt it worked good for 20 min. If I can replace the wheel I may get another 10 min out of it. Then my yard will be trimmed for this summer. Will I buy another Black& Decker product for next summer? I am disappointed.
Can you just order the plastic belt wheel? I have 2 GH1000's and I have hardly used them. Both of the belt wheels melted and slung the belts. Why do they do this !!!
how to load new string Question by santiago mercado
The string on my black and decker grass hog model #gh1000 does not feed through. What is the proper way to thread the string on the spool?
The most common issue that prevents line from feeding out of the head is line that is not wound on the spool properly. When winding the spool you need to be careful to align the string in straight rows. Try to not overlap the string with the previous wrap. The more the strings cross each other the more likely it is that the spool will jamb.
I hope that this helps!

Removal of Old Spool Housing Question by CM
How do I remove the old spool housing (Figure 16) from the trimmer. As one of my eyelets in the old spool housing was broken, I need to replace the old spool housing with a new one.
There is a screw, item #19 on the parts diagram, that holds the spool housing to the drive shaft. The screw requires a Torx driver to remove it. It looks to be a T-20 or T-25. Remove the screw. The spool can now be pulled off of the shaft.

Question by djm
the string on my grass hog doesn't stop feeding out. someone has told me that I probably lost a spring inside the head part but I don't see anything listed. what is wrong with this stupid thing?
Hi djm, I sounds like the feed lever has gone bad. It is part #479751-00 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com. A new feed lever should get you trimming again! Thanks! -Mark
Replace dual string head Question by Jeff
I want to replace the dual string head with a single head that is not auto advance. Or a dual string head that you just replace short pieces of cutter string. Is this possible????
The trimmer head used on these trimmers is a proprietary, built to fit head. I am not aware of another style of head which would fit your trimmer.
Good luck!

Garbage Review by Joe
Powerful motor is too much for the belt and pulley. The belt broke after about 20 hours of use. I replaced the belt but the second time It broke, I found the drive wheel melted. Drive wheel is not available separately, so the trimmer is trash.
I have found this to be true as well, good motor lousy parts.

I was using this trimmer for some light work then it started spinning very slow. I openeded up and low an behold the drive wheel was melted on half of the wheel. With no way to fix it without buying the whole motor this is trash!!!! Bad design.

Agree first belt broke 10 hours of use do to defective design. Also agree this is the Black & Decker product I purchase.
Bad bearing Review by Tinker
This is a nice trimmer to use but use it fast before it breaks. The bearing in the trimmer head on mine disintegrated. The trimmer head got so hot it melted the mounting area of the shield and it fell off. The B
There is a hidden screw under the label with the model name. Pull the label off (it will nicely stick again later) to remove the last screw. I actually forced mine open and broke that screw out before I found its hiding place.
I agree with others here: this trimmer is made to look sturdy and strong, and weighs in accordingly, but is a complete cheat. It can't even take light to ordinary use. Belt comes off or rips easily, black trimmer line casing got so lose it wouldn't stay in (had to order the free orange replacement part under warranty, which held up so far), and I haven't even gotten to try its edging feature yet because it's constantly broken.

There's probably 1 more screw just behind the black sticker that you might of missed. I ran into the same problem not to long ago. Try that and see if you have any luck.

There is a hidden screw under the long decal.
Response #4 Posted By jim
remove decal on housing. another screw under the decal. I know, I busted mine apart.
Response #5 Posted By Andrew
If you press with your thumb along the label you will feel the screw recess hole just above the vertical white line. Just push your Phillips head screwdriver through the label into the recess and remove that irritating last screw. No need to remove the label.
user Question by user
When I took the gh1000 apart a small spring (#11 part no. 580936-00 fell off--can't quite tell where it should go. Also to replace the belt (#4 part no. 58093-00) how do I get the rotating shaft off the belt pulley wheel. Thanks for the help>
The flex shaft just pulls out if you pull the head and shaft away from the motor casing/handle assembly. Put the belt around the pulley, reinsert the shaft. Put it all back together. Your pulley didn't melt?
Response #2 Posted By Joe
That spring goes under the shaft pivot adjuster between the housing and the button. It took me a few tries before I got it in just right.
The Type number is assigned by the manufacture and indicates that various updates have been made to the tool. The type number is located on the same tag as the model and serial numbers. If there is not a type listed it is usually safe to assume that it is a type 1 or the earliest type number. There really is no way to know what updates where made when a type number changes. The important thing is that when shopping for parts you are looking at the correct breakdown for your type number. That way you are assured to get the right parts.
Hope this answers your question!

Review by Dissapointed
Until recently, I was very pleased with this Trimmer. It was light and the string advanced worked as advertised with just a little practice. During an earlier purchase of a replacement locking"button" I also purchased a replacement belt in anticipation of it's failure. Well, I failed to notice that the drive gear was plastic. When the belt finally broke I felt smug because I had a new one hanging on my garage pegboard. I disassembled the body and was surprised to see that the drive gear had melted. Since the plastic gear is not available without purchase of the entire motor (for almost the cost of a new trimmer), now I have a worthless trimmer AND a new drive belt to go with it! Obviously this plastic part was designed to fail quickly. Black and Decker must think that planned obsolescence is the way to generate sales. Never again!
I need the drive pully assemble not the whole motor. bad move not selling this part . with the cost w/ motor it is cheeper to replace unit. part was listed for simmilar unit 90537041 but not with pricing
I guess the Type 2 is a bit better in that the drive pinion is metal. Other than that, it's still pretty cheesy. I burned out a belt in a bit over an hour of use. I guess this is meant for light duty trimming but you wouldn't think so from the promo stuff and the overall "styling". "Grass Hog" is pretty exaggerated. More like a sheep IMHO.
I agree with the previous poster. Buy a Stihl and be set for life.
This "tool" is not worth half the money the distributors are asking for it. The tool housing looks agressive and tough until the pulley melts after only a few 15 to 20 minutes uses. And the pulley is apparently not available without having to buy a new motor. Instead of making the repair, I invested my money on an Echo gas trimmer. Yes, it will burn gas but it will more environment friendly as it will last for year and years before it goes to landfill. I would rate this Black&Decker thing called "tool" VERY VERY BAD.
The orange plastic B&D uses is junk, the clips that hold the trimmer line broke off along with some other part under the line spool and just like my B&D 24v cordless drill the orange plastic handle broke. B&D should replace the orange plastic with nylon or something more durable.
I recently replaced the drive belt only to find that the PLASTIC drive gear also melted. I've had this trimmer for more than a year and, until now, I loved it. The plastic drive gear is a major flaw and it can't be replaced because it's part of the motor assembly. Now it's useless.
Review by Msexton
I used the grass hog for about a month and it broke. The item that broke was the item that holds the replacement spool in place. After many exhuasting hours trying to fing the replacement part, I have now found that this particular item, the spool holder, in now obsolete. This item should not be obsolete. It makes the tool useless.
Belt broke in less than 1 year. Plastic pinion melted a few months later. See Raymon's suggestion not to exceed 20 minutes of use. Better yet, limit yourself to 10 minutes.
The Black and Decker GH1000 is very good to use but is limited the the time of use about 20 minutes because if you use more time, the plastic pinion of the motor assembly will melt. Probably you can use it 20 minutes and rest 1 hour.
The belt seems to have slipped off of the shaft pulley. I can not seem to get the case open. I believe I have taken out all of the screws, but something is still holding it together near the button that allows you to twist the shaft....
