Question: Broken Impeller

Tom Parker

Same problem as everyone else. Nice blower but cheap impeller material, and can not buy part without buying the whole blower assembly for $50. It is a shame to throw a good
blower in the trash for a $2 replacement part. I will have to buy another blower now, but not a B & D ever again that's for sure- nor anything else they make.

Question: Not Holding A Charge

Kirk

I have a cs100 and Leaf blower and it's suddenly not holding a charge. I changed out the electrical base with a new one I had in my drawer but it's still not holding. I've had the blower for 6 years or so. Any suggestions?

Yes, I've had the same problem with the battery. Now I have a problem with the plastic impeller, which broke. I see by all the comments here, I might as well save my time looking for a new impeller. I'm going to buy a Craftsman this time.

Sounds like you need a new battery in the blower unit.

Had the same problem, I picked up a replacement battery (WKA12-5F) at Batteries Plus for $24.87. The battery was already charged and my blower works like new now.
Just out of the blue, I heard a funny noise, and my blower/broom stopped blowing air. Upon taking it apart and looking inside, the clear plastic wheel is broken. Can I order a replacement part, put it in myself, and will it work again? Thanks.

I disassembled my cs100 and found the same as everyone else. the impeller fan had disintergrated.I thought oh well I stick it in a box and order a replacement later. When I finally gor around to ordering, I found the replacement only came in a blower assembly for about $50 bucks. This is such a simple fix I couldn't believe it required a complete replacement. this kind of crap doesen't help our struggling economy one bit. What"s the matter with B

Unfortunately that plastic piece sounds like the dreaded broken fan that others have mentioned here. There's no way to replace just the fan. You have to buy the whole blower assembly.

Question: Bye Bye B&D

TC

Same here guys... Mine broke as soon as the warranty expired. Called B&D, told them I've been a loyal customer for years and that I owned over 50 B&D products but have never had a problem with them. As you can probably guess -- they could care less. They referred me to a repair shop where I was quoted $80 to fix it. Yeah right.

That's the last B&D product I'll ever buy.

Same thing here. 2 years and the fan is history. This sure looks like it was made to fail and then no replacement parts so you will buy new. Not me!!!!!

RE: the fan blade. Look no further than where it was mfg. U.S. Black and Decker products are made in China. I`ll not buy any B&D products.
I BOUGHT 2 CS100'S AND THOUGHT WHAT A GREAT PRODUCT. THEN I BOUGHT ONE FOR MAY WIFE'S 90 YEAR OLD MOTHER. THEN THEY STARTED BREAKING AND NOT HOLDING BATTERY POWER. TRIED ORDERING PARTS, THAT'S A JOKE, PARTS AND BATTERY TOOOO EXPENSIVE. I'M STUCK.

I need fan blade. What will you take for your fan blade? It screws off shaft
Good Blower, used in Acrylic Fab Shop for cleanup, until I dropped it and shattered the impeller, which fell out of the unit in pieces. All I want is a new impeller, not the whole blower assembly. I might as well buy a new blower for the price they want for a blower unit. I won't buy another B & D, that's for sure.

Same problem and opinion!

Any after market options?

Wonder if there is a legal recourse via a class action suit??
I loved it too, then a plastic piece (I assume the impeller) fell out of the tube. Second B&D tool which hasn't held up. Had a cordless hand held grass clipper. Piece of junk.

My impeller also fell apart. Seems to be a common problem with this product.
I have 2 of the CS100's. My oldest one was getting short winded as to the battery life and I discharged it completely and recharged it. That seemed to help. Now the impeller has done the same thing everyone else has said. It disintegrated at the shaft. I have a good 3M - 40 second structural adhesive(4740) I am going to try, the trick will be to get the impeller perfectly centered and level on the shaft. Wish me luck. I am going to see about taking my other one apart and reinforce the shaft area on the impeller to prevent premature failure.
Impeller broke the second year. Inferior plastic. Cheap. Should have been tested for longevity. No more B&D for our family and
friends.
Works great until the fan impeller breaks. Then to replace a cheap plastic part you must buy the blower assembly.

I went to use my blower and a piece of the clear plastic fan broke off and then fell apart when I turned it on again. I went online to see if any other complaints and was shocked to see how many others had the same thing happened. Now I see from the other reviews there is no cheap replacement part. Got my answer. So disappointing. I sure made a mistake buying the B & D brand. Maybe I will check the consumer complaint website and file a complaint there also. B & D stoled all our $$$$

I thought, even I can fix this! I loved this blower until I read the scores of posts about the exact same 'fan' issue as I am having.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. I did think that B&D cared more about their reputation then to put a faulty product on the market like this. I even talked the product up to my parents. I will let them know and anyone else who will listen, that this product, it's warranty, and replacement parts are a joke. Goodbye B&D, I might as well buy the off brand crap, knowing it will break in a year or so...

I'm right there with all of you. Impeller problem. Took it apart to see if I could fix it. Thought no problem. Buy the part and fix it. Well, went on the internet to find the par and saw all these reviews. That part should have been made with something more durable and a steel nut in it to screw on to the motor. Well, we went to sears and bought a Craftsman blower/vacuum for the same cost as the parts to replace it. Too bad, I Liked the CS100. Although it only blew for about 15 minutes and had to recharge.

Add me to the list of people dissatisfied with my blower - loved it while it worked the first two years but when it broke and I discovered I could not replace the one simple CHEAP plastic part I decided not to bother - I will look to another manufacture for my next blower!
Man, how many complaints does it take to get someone/anyone to address this issue. The product did work well for a year and a half. Then guess what, the impeller cracked! This obviously surprises no one. I'm done with B&D.
I really liked this blower until it quit running and I haven't found anyone to repair it. I then purchased 18V model and
it is not as good as the older 12V. I guess I'll try a different
brand.
It is quite powerful for about 10 minutes and then it slows down till it basically doesn't do much of anything after 15 minutes. Is this normal? I charged it up for over 24 hours initially and have kept it on the charger since then until I wanted to use it. The short operating time continues.
It was a fine until the fan broke, and now I can't replace it without buying the whole unit. What a ripoff B&D is. I hope Black & Decker management can sleep well at nights knowing I will never buy a B&D again.

My plastic fan just disintegrated. It would be so easy to just screw on another one. After 85 years on this soil, I see B&D has joined the "GOTCHA GAME".

My CS100 broke 2 days ago. Logged on to see if I could find the small plastic part to simply replace it. I see now with this blog that you have to spend $50 for the entire part. What a Ripoff for sure. Not getting the replacement part and will probably just purchase another brand going forward. This part is probably worth $5.

These things have to be assembled at the factory, so B&D must have hundreds of these parts in bins. A sad example of corporate irresponsibility to the consumer and the environment! Great unit, terrible support. For me it's bye,bye B&D

I have the same problem. The fan simply fell apart and I find no source for replacement. No further B&D tools of any kind for me.
I would have given it a 5 while it worked. One day it quit and it was simply the impeller ... silly that it was made of plastic. No problem I thought - just order a replacement for a few dollars, but oh no... you have to buy the whole assembly for $50 . Too bad- my rating of 5 went to a 1 immediately and my future intentions to buy anything from Black and Decker went away!
I just had a broken fan too, just right after 2 year warranty period! They must tested very carefully to come up with a plastic material that can be self destructed in 2 years! Hope BD's engineers do something else more reliable for the consumers...

Same here. The first B&D Tool I have had a problem with.
I've had my 18v broom for years and it has a lot of great features (light, quiet, works) but yesterday my fan broke too. I'm going to try some 5 minute epoxy on it... I may get a few more years out of it. Obviously the fan is the weak spot that they obviously designed in.

It 's funny why the plastic fan just failed right after two years period and right after the warranty expired. Mine just broke yesterday and after read the reviews in the forum, I think BD did that on purpose so we as the consumers have to buy their products every two years. That is IT. No more BD products for me.
I Love my link removed it all the time to dust off the deck or driveway. When it stopped, and I was able to disassemble it, see the problem and figure out how to fix it I was elated. Then I contacted the parts department, and found this cheap plastic part was only replaceable by buying most of the blower for over $50. What a rip! In this day of ecology and recycling what is a company thinking to fail to supply a part that breaks frequently? It looks like Black and Decker and DeWalt are environmentally irresponsible, especially since this has been brought to their attention. I will buy a new blower, but not from this company as my small protest to this wasteful policy.

I AGREE THIS IS CERTAINLY A "RIP off". I REPLACED THE ENTIRE BLOWER ON THIS DATE 10-09-09 BUT SINCE A FRIEND SUGGESTED I GO TO THIS WEB SITE AND DID, AND I FIND TO REPLACE THIS SMALL PLASTIC PART WOULD COST AS MUCH AS A NEW BLOWER. I WILL RETURN THIS MACHINE TOMORROW AND REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER BRAND. BLACK AND DECKER HAS BEEN MY FAMILY'S CHOICE OF YARD TOOLS BUT IT STOPS WITH ME.
Today the plastic fan broke in my CS 100 too. What a shame to have to throw away so many components because it costs the same to buy a new machine as to replace the component. One simple plastic part shattered and now the whole machine has to be disposed of. So much for the environment. B

I agree, this blower is great. But when you have a problem like a battery or a fan blade, you might as well buy a new one or maybe one from a different manufacturer.
My fan also broke. One day a loud crunch, then just the motor revving. the other 99% of the tool still works great, too bad i cannot purchase the 2.99 impeller vs $50 for the entire assembly.

I need a new fan impeller.
I agree, the fan is made from an inferior material; Had ours for 2 years and the tabs attaching to motor broke on it. A great product but that piece should be designed with a material that will last. Not going to purchase the whole motor assembly for $50 when a brand new one is $70. Design the fan to last or make that available to be purchased separately.

Absolutely absurd that you can't buy an impeller ... the thing should be made of metal or, if they insist on a plastic impeller then sell a replacement for a few bucks ... having to spend $50 for a complete assembly in just DUMB ..

I concur that the fan is made from an inferior material. It is way to hard. This item needed better engineering. Mine broke after 1.5 years also. I know I won't be buying a second though like kpeavy. Why would I do that, knowing it will break?
Plastic fan broke after 2 yrs. Why can't this part be made from a more durable material?
I've had two of these where the plastic fan assembly shattered to pieces after 1.5 years. I wish they would sell that part by itself since it clearly needs to be replaced often. Other than that, this tool is great for blowing the sidewalks after mowing.

When my cordless broom stopped working I opened it up and was pleased to see how easy the fix would be -- just replace the shattered plastic fan. I am very disappointed to discover that I have to buy (and therefore waste) much more than I need, and that I'll spend $50, plus shipping and handling, and two weeks to do it. For $14 more I can buy a complete new blower and charger. No wonder we are such a wasteful society!

I've just had the same part break. The fan blade is broken where it attaches to the spindle. What a waste of money and materials to have to replace the entire blower assembly. But then they wouldn't get as much profit I guess. Apparently creating a ridiculous amount of waste is of no concern. In this day and age this is ridiculous. Replacing the fan blade would be a simple repair.

By the way...there newer 18V blower (with removable battery) does not work nearly as well. The blower is not as strong and doesn't last as long. My sister bought one which I've tried. She didn't like it and has returned it.

Same fan problem; I also thought I could replace the part, but I guess not! And from the sound of things, I should stay away from the 18V blower, as it is not as strong. Maybe the trick is too put an epoxy or something on the new fan/impeller, to keep it from breaking at the 2 year point.

I'm amazed at the lousy engineering on this product by Black and Decker. As a designer/engineer, this sort of thing is simply inexcusable--but not for the corporate types who dictate how products can or can't be repaired (think Apple, who obviously believes that consumers can't be allowed to take apart or repair their products--or even replace batteries).

Well, I'm 1) not gonna pay $50 for a bunch of stuff I don't need just to get a $2 part, and 2) I'm going to try to locate a part from a competitor's blower that will fit and work as well as the B & D Unobtanium impeller part--maybe with a bit of modification, but one that IS available and doesn't cost $50.

If I find that part, I'll post it here first thing. B & D should be ashamed of themselves--oh wait--they fired the last guy who felt shame last year. Obviously no one now there gets it. My LAST B & D product for the forseeable future.
