This genuine Coleman assembly designed for use with 2-Mantle Dual Fuel Lanterns. This part controls the release of the air fuel mixture into the burner, controlling the level of light released by the mantles. A screwdriver is used for this repair. Note that the Generator is sold separately as part # 3000000453.

I purchased a used Coleman 288 lantern, then learned it had a design flaw. The plastic parts inside the valve melted. This replacement part had metal where once were plastic valve parts. I installed it & lo & behold, the lantern works! As far as the actual installation, if you have a bench vice, you're all set. Place the valve in the vise and turn the fount. I used a rubber strap wrench to get that extra torque without scratching the paint while removing the original valve. To put in the new one, i hand threaded it into the fount as far as i could to ensure it wasn't cross threaded, then stuck the new valve in the vise (with plywood guards this time) and just hand turned the fount down onto the valve. Worked like a charm. No leaks, no teflon tape (Teflon & gas? No thank you) or other pipe goop. Lantern works as it was meant to.

Generator was defective and the valve was broken. You do need some teflon tape also. Works like new now thanks

IMPORTANT
Prior to disassembled. Photograph with phone the positions of parts for reassemble.
1. Remove cap from the tank and inspect for rust or debris in the fuel tank.
2. Remove old fuel and any rust before repairs.
3. Remove Cap Nut, Cap or Top, Glass Lens, and Mantels. .
4. Remove the Gas Generator.
5. Remove retainer nut and slotted washer from the old valve body.
6. Lift the old top section off and set aside.
7. Unscrew retainer screw from the Knob and remove.
8. Now remove the round metal tube from around the valve assemble.
9. With a wrench unscrew the valve assemble from the tank. Careful not to spill any residual fuel.
10. Replacement is the reverse with these additional comments.
11. Use teflon tape on the threads of the valve body and Generator Nut.
12. When installing the Generator, MAKE SURE THE NEEDLE JET INSIDE IS BROUGHT DOWN AND INSERTED INTO THE HOLE ON THE GENERATOR CONTROL ROD. NOTE, THE ROD MUST BE IN THE UP POSITION OR OFF POSITION TO INSERT THE JET.
Maker sure to get the Air Intake Tube in correct position and is free of obstructions when installing the top.
