original switch for RYOBI HPL50 went bad. disassembled but could not repair.

Replacement switch for this model Ryobi HPL50 is no longer available from any supplier (that I could find).
Ordered switch for newer model. Different configuration but was only option other than buy new planer

Removed top cover from handle thus exposing wiring.
Removed/disconnected old switch.
Wired new switch which has different trigger configuration.
With electrical tape, taped new switch in upper part of planer handle. Trigger pointing up to operate with thumb. Covered all electrical connections with multiple layers of tape.
Removed (sawed off) upper portion of handle cover and replaced remaining cover from just above middle screw to lower screw hole.
Not pretty but works. Need to tape down or clothes-pin the safety button while operating.
