The key holding gear to the arbor shaft broke, causing shaft to spin freely.
I removed the motor from the saw. I wasn't sure if the brushes would need replacing, so I pulled the motor apart and took the armature out. Brushes still good for a 20 year old saw. The arbor mounts to the front end of motor housing and can be removed without pulling the armature. Very easy to fix if you are mechanically inclined. When the key sheared on the shaft, it scared up the gear and shaft a good bit. For no more than they cost, it was easier to replace them. The time for repair would have been less, but I drink a lot of coffee.
