Question: Ryobi String Trimmer Pull Start ...

1309706

I have a fairly new Ryobi cs30 string trimmer. It worked fine last week, but today when I wanted to start it, the pull cord came all the way out and back in without resistance. I watched the video on how to replace the spring and figured I could do that. But in my case, the spring apparently is okay. So, what part is failing on my unit and is it easily fixable?

Terry
Hello 1309708 It sounds like the pawls in the starter that pop out and engage the flywheel are stuck or are broken. If they are, you are going to need another recoil unit. Pull the starter off the unit and flip it over. Pull the cord and look for the little pawls to pop out. If they pop out when you pull the cord, then there was something jamming them while it was on the machine or the engagement tabs on top of the flywheel are bad.
Thanks. As a non-small engine expert, I'll give this a look. The dismantle video looked like it was do-able for me to try. I doubt if it is cost effective to take in for repair. I'll check on part replacement costs too. I see at Fleet Farm, they have homelites on sale for $60, but I'd rather fix this for less, if possible. Let you know.....

Question: Spring

killhigh

if part is discontinued where do I find the spring?
WJA
Hello killhigh,

Since I don't know the size of the 984106001 Spring. The 537338801 Poulan Spring might be able to be used. It measures 2 inches long and about 3/4 inch wide.

Question: Ryobi CS30 Primer

1201933

My primer has a slit in it. I can't seem to find the part number for replacement primer?

Ryobi CS30 weedeater

Thanks!
WJA
Hello 1201933,

The primer bulb that would fit the carburetor for your Ryobi CS30 Trimmer is part number 561635001. They are in stock and ready to ship to you.

-WJA
Thanks for the quick response!
Question: Starter Assembly

ediebb

the problem i am having with my cs30 is that the spring ( not part #41) pulled out of part #40 ( it had a straight part that comes up and through part #308374001 is bent and pulled out...I bent it back and reassembled only to have it bend and pull out again after 3 or 4 pulls) does this spring come already attatched to part #308374001 or do i have to order it seperate? and if so may i have the part number and cost so that I may order it with the starter pulley...i figure get both new ( as spring is prob weaker now that it has been bent a cople times) and solve the problem all at once. Thank you and I await your response.
WJA
Hello ediebb,

The part number 308374001 starter pulley does include the spring with it. Also we have prepared an article and video that I hope will help you with the problems you are having.

Question: Ryobi Handle

ktm400xcw

I have a Ryobi BC30, model number RY30060B. The handle broke because of the poor design. When you press the trimmer on the ground to extend the string, it causes the handle to bend down. You then have to bend the handle back into the correct position. After doing this several times, the handle breaks. The handle should have been designed more like a triangle or rectangle, like other trimmers for more strength.

Therefore, my questions are: Would the front handle assembly (part number 308472001) for the CS30 and SS30 fit my trimmer? Would the CS30 and ss30 handle be stronger than the replacement handle?

Thanks
WJA
Hello ktm400xcw,

I've looked at all of the parts diagrams for the trimmers you have mentioned. It looks as if the CS30,SS30 and the BC30 all use the 308472001 front handle assembly.

Question: Ryobi Wont Start

1080997

inherited a ryobi cs30. looks fairly unused. wont start.
cleaned and blew out carb (except did not remove adjustment screws) -looked very clean inside. drained and filled with new 50:1. filter clean, plug looks good-switched plugs-no affect. primer fills with no leaks and under pressure. fuel lines are good, primer stays really full and i suspect is recirculating right back into tank???, float needle lets gas in.

checked for grounding. how do you check for spark?
No gas in throttle, what could be keeping the carb from letting gas into the throttle?
Ryobis are junk not worth fixing.
WJA
Hello 1080997,

We have a couple of articles and videos that might just get your Ryobi going again. Here are the links to them.

Question: Primer Bulb

CSmith6478

Does any gas get pumped into the cyclinder when you press the Primer Bulb to prime the engine? It appears to me that the gas is pumped through the carburtor and that it just returns to the tank, which will pressurize the tank so that gas will flow. I get no gas coming from any port when I have the carburator disconnected fromt the engine but still hooked to the gas lines.
No, the primer bulb ONLY pulls fresh gas into the carburetor while pushing OLD gas and AIR back into the fuel tank. It is actually a purge bulb.
The Primer Bulb does not pump gas into the carb or the cylindar. It is actually a purger which pulls the air out of the carb and the fuel replaces the air in the carb. If it does, then it's connected wrong. If it is an external bulb, the short nipple goes to the outlet of the carb and the long nipple returns to the tank.
If it is hook up right or the bulb is mounted on the carb, watch the flow of the fuel/air bubbles in the line which carries the excess fuel to the tank. If you see it moving back toward the carb then the snap-in primer or the mounted primer is defective. Instead of pulling the air out it's pushing it in which is contrary to the design.
Question: Ryobi Cs30 String Trimmer

paulrichmond

Where do I buy piston rings for this motor?? Pauls asking.
Many vendors have the rings. Try ebay also if you have an account on there or wish to start one.
Question: Carburetor

paulrichmond

are gaskets and/or overhaul kits available?
Yes, they are. Your exact carburetor application is the key. If you have the Ruiing carb without the choke lever instead of this Homelite carb, Zama carb parts fit it. One or two kits for it are on Ebay. There are also kits for the Homelite carb, but I can't tell if it is the Ruiing or Zama.
Question: Drive Shaft Problem

courtdubya

I see that people on here are having problems with the drive shaft not engaging. However, I have the opposite problem. As soon as the engine starts, the drive shaft is spinning. This poses an obvious safety issue. Please help!
You need to turn the Idle adjustment screw counterclockwise to slow down the Idle speed of the engine.
Question: Trimmer

frank

The engine runs but the trimmer head doesn't spin. I know that the cable in trimmer is not broken.
Same problem here. Did you ever find out what was wrong? Tnx.
Have the same problem - was there any resolution here?
WJA
Hello frank,

Check your 308177001 drum and connector for damage, also look at your 00242 clutch plates to see if they are damaged or worn.

-WJA
Question: Idle Adjustment

Jim-FL

Can I adjust the low speed idle on my CS30 trimmer? It will not idle. It stalls when I need it to idle.
Your carb has an Idle Adjustment screw. However, the setting of the screw may NOT be the problem. The carb may need new internal parts (they come in kit form) as ethanol and time wear them out.
Question: Ryobi Trimmer

Bob Rodriguez

I have a Ryobi CS30 Trimmer that starts up great but when I give it throttle it stalls and then dies out, any recommendations?
1. Running too lean
2. High speed jet clogged
You may need a new fuel pump diaphragm. These carbs develop different problems. There are 2 kits for these carbs. 1. Gasket and Diaphragm kit (cures most problems)
2. Complete Rebuild Kit (includes the G & D kit) and has other important parts to restore the carburetor
Question: Won

Stan

Was using my CS30 Ryobi when all of a sudden it stop running. I did notice that the spark plug was getting hot to touch. Also the spark plug is E3, and I think the cap maybe a little small. It would run than the spark plug wire would pop off. It stopped working with the original spark plug.
Heat Range is fairly important on these machines, but usually not critical. Try to reinstall the OEM sparkplug (a new one) at the proper gap.
Question: Timing

jerry

Getting gas !! Very nice spark !! Won't run? Sounds like the flywheel has moved on the crankshaft. What does a 30cc ? CS30 RX30000A engine have to keep the flywheel from getting out of time. Do you know the part number if there is such a part?
Thanks for any info...... Jerry
Hi Jerry,

The Flywheel has grooves milled into it that align with tabs on the crankshaft to hold the alignment for timing. I would have to suspect a carburetor issue. When an engine either won't start or does start but then dies while idling, 9 times out of 10 it is an issue with the carb.

The carburetor can become clogged by dirt or other debris. The dirt may get by a damaged or missing air filter. It can enter through a crack in the fuel lines. Some tools use a foam air filter. Over time the filter itself will breakdown and create debris that will enter the carb and clog it. It is a good idea to replace the air filter at least once a year. If fuel is left sitting in an unused trimmer for more than a couple of months the fuel will begin to breakdown and go bad. As the fuel breaks down it will start to become gel like as well as begin to coat the internal parts of the carburetor with a varnish. The gel and varnish will plug the carburetor so that fuel can no longer flow through it. To get your trimmer running again you will need to either rebuild or replace the carburetor. When you replace the carburetor it is always a good idea to also replace the air and fuel filters. This helps ensure that more debris won't clog the new carburetor.

There is not a rebuild kit offered for your carburetor so it will need to be replaced. The carburetor is part #308054003 and is available from http://www.ereplacementparts.com.

I hope this helps with your repair!

@ Mark If the carb is a Zama or Walbro there is a repair kit for it. If it is a Ruiing carb, then the carb for a Zama with the similar body and style will fit it! Ask me how I know Mark!
Most machines have a key built into the flywheel. There is a small, very small chance, that the key is sheared. If the flywheel moves out of position but still spins with the shaft, it will give you spark but at the wrong time. If the key is built in and is sheared, then you need a new flywheel. There are a few that has a lock key that is not built in. If could have sheared or fallen out. Like I said this is unlikely but something to look at. Has the machine ever seized suddenly while you were using it and the problem built up since?
Question: Hard To Start

JayZ

I bought a RY 26500 in May and after several use, it would not start. I tried everything on the manual, but it still would not start. So frustrated.
Hi JayZ,

First verify that the fuel you are using is mixed with 2-cycle oil at the proper ratio as specified by the manufacture and that fuel is no more than three months old. If the gas is old replace it with new, fresh fuel.

The spark plug may be bad. Occasionally a plug will fail prematurely.

The trimmer may simply be flooded. When a 2-cycle engine becomes severely flooded the cylinder will need to be blown out with compressed air. Remove the spark plug. You will need a spray nozzle for your compressor that will fit snugly into the plug hole. Now blow air into the cylinder while slowly pulling the starter rope. The air will exit through the muffler and will blow out any gas remaining in the cylinder or exhaust.

If the trimmer won't start after this then I would suspect a bad ignition coil. You will need a spark tester to check for spark. If spark is not present then the coil is bad.

The spark plug is part #870174001. The ignition coil is part #850108002. Both parts are available from http://ereplacementparts.com.

I hope this helps with your repair!

@ Mark If spark is not present....the cause MAY JUST be that the air gap between the magnets of the flywheel and the legs of the ignition coil module NEEDS to be adjusted, not necessarily replaced.
Three steps in this order. Compression, Spark and fuel. You say this machine is not a year old, why compression. Have you been using regular gasoline from the gas station. It's been proven that Ethanol can be damaging to a 2 cycle engine, especially the rings. Find someone who has a compression gauge and check it. You should have somewhere between 90 to 120 psi. Anything less than 60 psi is not good.
Spark. Like the others are saying there are numberous places the ignition system can go wrong. Spark plugs are not that expensive. Get a new one. If it still doesn't fire and you can't get ahold of a spark tester (Napa carries them), get the old one and bend the tip a l little, snap the boot on and lay it against the metal on the machine so that it is grounded. Pull the starter, you should get a nice blue spark or glow.
If you are getting good spark, the next step is fuel. Get some carb cleaner, spray some in the spark plug hole or in the throat of the carb. Pull start, if it pops then you know the carb or fuel line is the problem. Mix some Seafoam Engine Treatment with the fuel and keep trying to start by spraying carb cleaner through the carb throat. You may have to pull the carb and clean it. Ethanol can be damaging to the check valves, diaphram. Did you completely drain the fuel tank and ran the machine dry before you stored it for the winter? If not, the carb is gummed up. Get some Seafoam spray cleaner and flush out the carb after taking it apart or you can try and attach a fuel line to the in port on the carb and the other in Seafoam treatment and purge it through the system.
