A part had broken under the strain of the shield spring

    Steven - September 15, 2016
    Tool Type

    Jointer

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    Less than 15 minutes

    Tools Used

    Screwdriver

I removed three screws which held the assembly in place and together.
Reviewed the manual to insure the parts had been assembled correctly. I purchased the tool used only recently. The jointer shield is many years old and could have been incorrectly replaced some time before I acquired the tool.
I Reassembled the parts, lubricated the shaft and screwed them back into place.
