How to Replace the Pre-Filter on a Makita Cut-Off Saw

The cut-off saw uses a dual-element air filter system. Air first passes through the pre-filter, and then through the main air filter. The pre-filter removes the largest particles of debris before they can reach the main filter. The pre-filter should be inspected before each use, and washed and oiled after every eight hours of use. When the pre-filter begins to wear-out and crumble, it should be replaced.
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE PRE-FILTER
1. Remove the pre-filter.
a. Loosen the thumbscrew on the top of the cover.
b. Remove the top cover from the saw.
c. Remove the pre-filter from the (underside of the) top cover.
INSTALLING THE NEW PRE-FILTER
2. Oil the new pre-filter.
a. Place the new pre-filter into a plastic bag.
b. Add small amount of oil to the bag and work the oil into the new filter.
c. Remove the filter from the bag, and use a rag to remove any excess oil. (The filter should not be soaked with oil. It should be consistently or evenly coated.)
3. Install the pre-filter.
a. Install the new pre-filter into the top cover.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT
4. Reinstall the top cover.
