Coffee Maker: Trips the Power Source Circuit Breaker

If your coffee maker trips the power source circuit breaker, inspect these parts for damage: the heating element, power cord, gasket, and control board. Before you consider replacing your coffee maker altogether, use our repair guide to help you get it back to running normally on your own. Check your owner's manual for information related to your model.

Power Cords
Power Cords
If the power cord on your coffee maker has been cut or damaged in a way that the wires have a poor contact, then they will spark and can cause a breaker to trip. The plug can also become damaged and cause the breaker to trip. To replace the power cord, flip the coffee make over and remove the bottom plate, using a screwdriver to remove the screws. The power cord attaches through the back of your unit to the control board. The cord splits into two wires, each attached to the board. To detach this you will need to desolder the connection, and solder the new power cord to the control board.

Gaskets
Gaskets
Your coffee maker has gaskets and elbows as part of its water system. If any one of these parts become cracked or damaged and start leaking into the electrical components, then it will cause a short and trip the breaker. To disassemble your coffee maker to the extent that you are able to spot the source of the leak visually, start from the top this time. Remove screws holding the top cover assembly in place and remove it to view the parts inside. Your coffee maker may have a plastic plunger underneath the cover, which when removed has a gasket. Check the gasket for leaks and replace if necessary.

Control Boards
Control Boards
The control board on your coffee maker contains components that can fail and cause the breaker to trip. Liquid leaking onto the board can also cause the breaker to trip. The control board is also known as a circuit board or motherboard. To replace the board, first, unplug the coffee maker, remove the carafe and flip it over. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the bottom cover in place. The control board may be held in place with a bracket and screw, remove those as well. The power cord may also be held in place with a bracket which needs to be removed in order to access the control board. Pull out the control board and detach the remaining wires. You may need to use a soldering iron to detach wires and reconnect them to the new board.

Heating Elements
Heating Elements
If your coffee maker trips the circuit breaker, the issue could be a burnt out heating element. In rare instances, the element will burn out and the power will then travel through the metal housing instead, causing a breaker to trip. In this case, the heating element should be replaced. Unplug the unit and remove the carafe before flipping it over and beginning the repair. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the plastic bottom cover in place. Slide out the metal retainer which holds the heating element in place, and disconnect the wires that connect the element to the control board. Detach the rubber hoses from the element and install the new part in reverse order.
