Replacing the motor housing will vary on all models, as they are different. Through, the following repair procedure will be similar. Remove the base from the unit and the motor cover. Remove the tension springs on the carbon brushes. Separate the upper and lower half of the motor housing. Remove the collet from the shaft then by using a rag, or a thick glove, tightly hold onto one end of the armature shaft as you use an impact wrench to remove the chuck. Tap the armature free of the housing with a rubber mallet. Remove the e-clip inside the housing then tap the bearing free using a socket that contacts the outer race of the bearing to avoid damaging the bearing. Spin the bearing to check for roughness. If it is rough, install a new bearing. If it spins smooth, the bearing is still good.
Install the armature into the new housing by using the same socket to tap it in place and install the retaining clip. Install the armature into the housing and tap into place with a rubber mallet, if needed.
Reinstall the chuck with the impact wrench as you hold on to the opposite end. Reinstall the collet. Remove the brush holders and insulators from the old motor housing and disconnect any wires at the holders. Remove all switches from the old motor housing. Take a picture of the wiring for reinstallation reference. If you have to cut any wires for removal of parts, make sure you cut the wire as close to the crimped ends as possibly, preventing loosing wire length. When re-crimping ends, remove ¼ inch of insulation from the wire when attaching new ends. Remove the screws securing the field in place, then take the field out.
Clean the field with electrical contact cleaner and install into the new housing. Make sure the field is installed correctly for the wires to line up with the connections. Reinstall the switch speed control and brush holders, with insulators, and reconnect all the wires. Join the two halves of the motor housing together. Reinstall the tension on the carbon brushes. Install the motor cover and the base.
