Jointer: Fence Won't Lock in Place or Maintain Proper Angle Setting

If the fence won't lock in place or maintain a proper angle setting, check the handle, fence, and clamp. Use our repair guide for tips on how to fix your jointer yourself, saving you on the hassle of having to call a professional. Refer to your owner's manual for model specific advice.

Clamps
Clamps
A clamp is a fastening device used to tightly secure objects together to prevent movement. A worn clamp on a jointer will not be tight enough to support the fence, causing it to move around during the cutting process. Inspect your clamps for looseness. If they are worn, replace them. The clamps are just held in by screws on the back of the fence. Remove the screws, the old clamp and reinstall with the new clamp.

Fences
Fences
The fence is a flat surface alongside of the cutting blade, used to keep the board against when cutting straight cuts. If this fence warps over time, it will not give you a straight cut. To check it for straightness, use a framing square at different points along the fence. If it shows it is not square, and cannot be adjusted to correct, then the fence is warped. To replace the fence, remove the bolts behind the fence securing it in place on the adjusting bracket. Install the new fence and secure it with the bolts.

Handles
Handles
Handles are used to make adjustments and tighten down settings. Any worn, stripped or broken handles will need to be replaced immediately in order to make, and lock in place, for any settings and adjustments for your desired cut. Inspect all handles and replace any that are not performing. Handles simply screw on and off. Some may be held in place by a set screw.
