Cultivator: Leaks Gas

If your cultivator is leaking gas, you’re not alone, as this is one of the most common symptoms for cultivator owners. Refer to our troubleshooting and repair guide to help you accurately identify the problem and the best way to repair it. This is a general guide for your repair; for more detailed information on your model, refer to the owner’s manual.

Fuel Filters
Fuel Filters
Leaking gas is a major problem for you cultivator, and could lead to other serious symptoms. If you notice gas leaking from your machine, it is important that you determine the cause, to avoid engine problems and other symptoms, as well as fire hazards. If your cultivator has an in-line fuel filter, it can crack and cause this problem. Your fuel filter is in the fuel tank and prevents debris from entering the fuel lines. A crack in the fuel filter is a somewhat rare occurrence, but if you notice gas leaking, the fuel filter is one place that it could be coming from.

Primer Bulbs
Primer Bulbs
Your cultivator’s primer bulb works as a vacuum to draw fuel into the carburetor. The carburetor can then provide the correct ratio of fuel and air to the engine for combustion. In the process of priming the engine, fuel is drawn in to the primer bulb. If your primer bulb has a small crack, it may begin to leak some of this fuel. Not only does leaking fuel create a mess and a safety concern, but if this crack becomes larger it may interfere with the carburetor’s ability to function normally. A broken or cracked primer bulb will need to be replaced to solve this issue.

Fuel Tank
Fuel Tank
The fuel tank is a logical first place to look when you notice that your cultivator is leaking gas. The fuel tank stores the gas that runs your machine. Because the fuel tank is usually located on the exterior of your cultivator, it can become cracked, which will cause it to leak fuel. If your fuel tank is leaking, your cultivator’s fuel reservoir will continue to be depleted. At this point the engine will not be able to function properly. Leaking fuel can also create a mess as well as a safety concern. If your fuel tank is damaged to the point that fuel is leaking, it should be replaced.

Caps
Caps
If you notice fuel leaking from your fuel tank, but can’t find any significant damage to the tank itself, the cause may be a faulty or broken fuel cap. The fuel cap can be screwed on and off in order to refuel your cultivator. Over time, the threads on the cap can become cross-threaded and this can result in a leak. The cap can also be damaged and this can cause a fuel leak as well. Sometimes, the fuel cap has been screwed on incorrectly, and the problem can be solved very easily. However, if the cap is damaged or stripped, it may need to be replaced.

Fuel Lines
Fuel Lines
A cracked or broken fuel line is a common cause of your cultivator leaking gas. Fuel lines are designed to carry fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. Occasionally, these fuel lines can become dislodged, and this will cause a fuel leak. If you have inspected your fuel lines and have concluded that they are connected properly, but they are still leaking, they may be cracked. Sometimes the crack can be quite small, but will still leak gas from your machine. In this case, you will need to replace the fuel lines.
