Cultivator: Engine Rpm's Too High

If the engine on your cultivator has excessively high RPMs, check the following parts: the governor, carburetor, and the springs. Refer to our repair and troubleshooting guide for help. Our repair information is a general guide to help you, but for more specific repair information related to your model, check your owner’s manual.

Springs
Springs
If your cultivator’s engine RPMs are running higher than they should, it is a likely indication that something is wrong with your governor. Your governor has a spring that is a crucial piece in the process of regulating your engine speed. If the spring is damaged or you have the wrong spring in your machine, it can cause the engine’s RPMs to surge. Occasionally, the spring can become dislodged and this will result in this symptom. If you can re-attach the spring, it may solve the problem, however if you have the incorrect spring, or yours is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Carburetors
Carburetors
Your cultivator’s carburetor injects the correct mixture of air and fuel into the engine so that combustion can be achieved. If the carburetor is clogged or damaged, it can prevent the carburetor from injecting the proper mix. When too much fuel enters the engine, this is known as running rich. If too much air enters the engine, it is called running lean. If your engine runs lean, it will cause the RPMs to surge up too high. Not only will this affect your cultivator’s overall performance, but it can lead to more serious issues and ultimately complete engine failure. You may be able to clean a clogged carburetor to solve this issue, by using a carb kit to break it down then rebuild it after cleaning, however if the carburetor is damaged, you may need to replace the carburetor altogether.
