Adjustable Wrench
Unscrew the worn bump knob from the trimmer, the pull out the spool. Place the new spool in the spool housing and let some cutting line out of the spool housing. Screw on the the bump knob, and you're done.

Used screw driver to tear bumper head off. Used hammer, pliers and adjustable wrench to loosen nut holding everything on. Then replaced new reel and bumper head. Never did anything like this before .

Followed eReplacement videos for removing outer spool and for assembly of a new outer spool with all new components including retainer, thrust washer, slider, springs, E-clip, C-clip, reel and bump head knob. The length of 3/8" brass pipe was used to seat the retainer in the outer spool. Removing the old outer spool was difficult because of need to cut the retainer which was accomplished with a 1/4" chisel with access though one of the eyelet holes.

We already had the old bump head and reel removed. All I had to do was position the bump head within the reel assembly and hand tighten. An easy fix which rejuvenated the 11-year-old trimmer!
