Transaxle shaft is D-shaped to fit the D-shaped pulley opening. Over time, the shaft had worn the pulley opening into a perfect circle, so it just floated on the shaft, thus not gripping the shaft

The job was difficult because there is no room to work between the transaxle shaft end and the frame to get the pulley off (and you couldn't really tell for sure what the problem was until the pulley was off). The exploded drawing looks simple enough, but the reality is otherwise (as is often true). The high-low linkage bar was in the way as well. Loosening its clips still did not provide enough room to remove the old pulley. Essentially, we had to half-disassemble the frame from the rear, (not fooling with the transaxle itself), and use a pry bar and braces, with one man lifting the body/chassis at an angle, to gain the critical space (a couple of inches) to remove the pulley (after removing the ring clip and washer). Once the pulley was off, the rounded hole in the center confirmed the suspicion of simple wear over time. The new pulley fit snugly, and after reassembly, the old Husqvarna is back for its twelfth season. I mow about four acres, and much of it is hilly and rough, so the machine gets hard use, and doesn't really owe me anything. The Briggs and Stratton V-twin has been great, needing one coil/magneto replacement and an alternator ring in all this time. I am pretty faithful about oil, filter, and plug changes, and I always let it idle a minute or so after use to cool (and I keep debris and grime which also trap heat) off the engine housing). Quick access to the part was critical, as this time of year, lead time at the repair shop is about two weeks, not to mention the cost. I've got thirty-five bucks in a repair that would have cost me hundreds at the dealer, by which time I would have had to have been haying and baling the yard...Special thanks also to my friend John.
