The platen was worn out, therefore the sanding pads would not stay in place.
Remove the old platen by removing the screws in the pad. Then attach the new pad with the screws. Very easy.

Platen lost its "velcro" adhesion
Simple. Several screws, but I recommend buying several. This Ryobi manual says "excessive" pressure will cause the plastic curlicues to melt and no longer hold sandpaper. In truth even mild pressure causes same problem over time. But cheap and easy to fix.

Bonding failed on original platen of my Ryobi Corner Cat detail sander.
The sandpaper sheets are manufactured with loops and the platen has a hook layer bonded to a foam rubber pad.

Remove the screws holding the platen to the sander. Save the screws.

Pull off the damaged platen.

Replace with the new platen, orienting the pointy ends together and aligning the screw holes.

Replace the screws being careful to match the fine threads.

The problem I have is not always letting the tool do the work it is designed to do. In this case putting too much pressure on the sander which will wear out the velcro platen surface.
Simply removing five screws changing the platen and putting the five screws back

Platen teeth were damaged and would not hold the sandpaper.
Remove the Phillips screws holding the platen.
The screws will be used to attach new platen.
Discard the damaged platen.

Align the new platen and replace the screws (Carefully to avoid damaging the threads.)
Apply the sandpaper of choice and get back to work.

This Ryobi platen is easily damaged if excess pressure is applied while sanding..
